Brackman's good start is very encouraging. I wanted to believe the draft would be at least 3 deep in college studs, so that the Cubs couldn't lose with any of them and they could go college besides. Given his limited history and limited success last year, i'd feared Brackman might struggle again and be exposed as havng some problem.

That said, I still find it questionable whether the Cubs would be interested in Wieters. He doesn't seem their type. And a big slow catcher who's maybe destined for DH or 1B/LF doesn't necessarily seem the type of dude an NL-team or the Cubs in particular would go after. Unless they are really, really sure he's got Aram-caliber hitting.

Wilken's running the draft now. I wouldn't rely too much on past Cubs' draft history.

Wieters has the goods to play 3B or RF, especially given that his arm could have gotten him a first round nod as a pitcher. He's got the kind of athleticism that will allow him to stick at 1B/3B/RF/LF and be effective at that position. Whether or not he can stick at catcher is anyone's guess.

As I said before, Wieters willl make the Majors as a catcher IMO. He's a good enough defensive player to make it there. And even if he can't stay there, 3B or RF will be a great spot for him with his absurd right arm. The guy has an absolute laser arm.

How quick does he get it to second?

BA story on Pepperdine's Adrian Ortiz (Premium), who the Cubs picked in the 5th round in 2004 but failed to sign.

"The most amazing thing is watching him play defense and go get balls out in center field," Rodriguez said. "At the same time, Adrian creates a lot of havoc for the other team's defense. That's what we're hoping for. We want him getting on base so our two, three and four hitters can drive him in, even if it's from first base."

For that to happen, Ortiz will have to hit the ball on a line or on the ground more consistently. He has started for the Waves in all three of his seasons at Pepperdine, hitting .281 with a .321 on-base percentage and 41 runs scored as a freshman and batting .340 with a .380 on-base percentage last season. Despite a career-high average and improved on-base percentage, Ortiz scored just 32 runs in 2006 mostly because of his plate approach.

"In my opinion, he's been too much of a fly-ball hitter for a leadoff guy," said an American League scout. "His game is all about line drives."

Ortiz' leadoff triple proved the scout's point. The hit had plenty of loft and probably would've been caught had it not fallen into the gap. To his credit, Ortiz understood that wasn't an ideal at-bat, despite the result.

"I don't want to hit fly balls," he said. "Even when I hit fly balls over guys' heads or in the gaps, I get a little bit upset about it. Getting on base and scoring runs is more important. Whether it's an error, a hit, a hit-by-pitch or a walk, it doesn't matter how I get on."

His teammate, lefty starter James Adkins, continued his fine season by going eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out 12. He's got a 1.50 ERA and .195 batting average against over four starts. ...
NC State right-hander Andrew Brackman was electric on Friday night, carrying his stuff -- including a fastball that ran up to 99 mph -- into the eighth inning. ...

Price:

Complete game (9 IP), 7 hits, 2 ER, 13 K's.

Weiters, if I remember right, was 3/5 today in a high scoring game.

Brackman pitches tommorrow.

he got off to a similar start last season and fell apart during the meat of the SEC schedule. Be catious with the stats you see, he's faced glorified texas/southern california high school teams.

Weiters 2/4 with 2 singles, and BB. No K's. Threw 45 pitches as well.

Up to .350 with a .444 OBP on the year. 11BB and 11K's. Power has been down a little of late (lots of singles), but it'll get there.
