IDK why we had him on the trade block this winter. My bet is b/c Niefi is Dusty's toy and he wants to use him more than anyone.

Nobody knew how well he was going to start. I'm glad we didn't trade him.

The subject of why he was on the tradeblock has been widely discussed in these forums for the last few months. The Cubs wanted to improve defensively up the middle and with Walker's production and his very attractive contract, Hendry thought he would be a valuable trading chip. Hendry wasn't going to let Walker go for nothing though, I am glad he held onto him, and I was wrong when I said I thought he would be traded before opening day.

Which explains Neifi's one start. Hendry has gotten off way too easily on this trading Walker business. Dusty seems like he's backed Walker every step of the way.

One of the rumors had him going to Baltimore for Matos who is hitting about .180. As the old cliche goes: "Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make."

Exactly that, it was just a rumor. I don't think Hendry could have seriously even considered makiing that trade. And why would Baltimore even want Walker? Where would he have played?

At the time there was serious concern about when Brian Roberts would be available to play. Baltimore's interest in Walker would have been as a temporary fill-in for Roberst, and then as a player who could fill in at 2B, 1B, DH, and the OF in a pinch.

That is true and I know there were rumors out there about the trade, but I don't think Hendry really ever considered it. At least I would hope so.

According to what I was reading, not only was Hendry considering the deal, it would've happened had Baltimore not insisted that Hendry pay the difference between Walker's and Matos's contracts (I believe just under 1 million).

In short, Baltimore's complete stupidity in not realizing what they were getting saved the Cubs.

Walker on his hot start:

“I’ve got a short leash, so I have to take advantage of every possible thing I can,” Walker said. “It’s going pretty good so far.”

I don't understand the stigma of starting Walker, he has better defense than Jerry Hairston Jr. (he hits lefty's better too, if I remember correctly) and he's infinitely better than Neifi Perez on offense.

Infinitely.

Thats really big.

I'm still confused as to why Neifi is even in the running for the 2B job. It makes about as much sense to me as Giant fans insisting that Bonds has never taken steroids.

The NSBB Walker for Matos rumor thread, mainly.

BTW, the guy we almost traded for Matos is working on a .433 average.

Not really. In responding to who's the opening day 2nd baseman at the Cubs convention. Dusty Baker said "Right now. . right now it would be. . . Todd Walker. . ::claps::. . . . But alot can happen between now and spring training. . ::boos::. .
