OK, I am gonna rant here a little bit and probably somewhat misguided, but the consistency at which fans boo players from our own team is getting a little over the top. OK J. Jones has started slowly there is no denying that. And he has had some trouble making contact especially yesterday, but let's take into account that he has only had 13 ab's. He is from the A.L. so he hasn't seen the majority of the guys that he is facing enough to have a true feel for how they pitch. Probably worst of all in my eyes is that he has hit the ball hard a few times just at people. It is crazy to me that because fans wanted a bigger name player in RF that they are gonna boo the player that was signed to play there. Cubs fans are going to get a bad rep pretty soon because it was clear as day to those of us at the game that it was getting to Jones. Just tossing the ball around in RF after two of the 3 k's in yesterdays game, his body language was sluggish and you could literally see how upset he was. Fans turning on their players isn't a good thing. I understand booing at times because we pay all the money and what not, but to boo a guy every single time he does anything wrong it just plain dumb.

J. Jones is not a bad player. He is an average player but not a bad player. I feel he will turn it around, it is just game 5 tonight. Booing anyone right now is just ridiculous.

I agree with you. Booing Corey was one thing...Jacque's been here all of a week...he may never turn into the player we'd all love to have out there...but I have no doubt he's going to do the best he can. To boo him not two games into the home stand...heck, not 4 games into the season, reflects very poorly on Cubs fans.

Maybe if we keep booing at bad baseball players then they will not sign to play here in the future.

Then the organization would be forced to bring up someone from within, and Sing would be our RFer.

I also think booing JJ after just two home games is pretty sad and embarrassing. If he weren't hustling or was as nonchalant as Corey often appeared to be (I realize appearances can be deceiving), that's one thing -- but JJ's clearly putting in an effort, and pressing at the plate.

Are you suggesting that would be a bad thing? Because I, for one, would like to see Sing get some kind of shot at the big club.

I don't think the fans are booing Jones because they hate him, most of them just hate the fact that the Cubs signed him to a ridiculous contract and they are stuck with seeing an avg to below avg. RF everday for the next three years. I've seen Jones play for the Twins and he is nowhere near as bad as he is playing now and he seems like a nice enough guy, but he is going to have to play way over his head to win over the fans.

Unfortunately, Jacque Jones is the brunt of boos that more likely would be directed at Jim Hendry, but Hendry doesn't take the field.

Jacque Jones isn't a horrible player. He isn't among the elite, either. I don't fault Jones for being mediocre. I fault Cubs management for not doing a better job of landing a better player to stick in RF. They've failed 2 years in a row. And it probably wouldn't be all that big of a deal if Jones was out there if the rest of the team was much better than they are, but add to the fact Cubs management gave a mediocre player a 3 year multi-million dollar contract, and it compounds the problem.

I can still hear the interviews in my mind from last year when they signed Burnitz. "He had a great year last year and we think he's going to be a big help to this team", ignoring the fact he spent the last year in Colorado, which I basically challenge anyone to find a player who hasn't had a a huge boost in his career AVG's by playing in Coors.

I mean, test the logic. It's not much different to think Burnitz will have another tremendous season in Chicago comparable to the one he had in Denver than it is to think that Jeff Cirillo will be a tremendous asset as an everyday starter this year because he had that one good season or two in Denver a few years back.

I believe I recall Burnitz saying he thought he'd be able to match his HR output from the previous season.

But, this is a Jacque Jones thread. WYSIWYG. He didn't play in Colorado. We see his everyday numbers in Minnesota, and we can get a pretty good idea what to expect from Jones. Unfortunately, it's not going to be much. But, I can't boo him because of that.

I can't boo Neifi and I can't boo Jones. It's not their fault they are here.

I do believe boos should be saved for players on the opposing team, and lack of hustle or appearance of lack of care among members of the team you would typically cheer. In other words, when a Moises Alou kicks a ball into the ivy because he's too lazy to pick it up, boo until you lose your voice. If a guy doesn't run out a ground ball, boo him to the point the manager has to take the guy out of the game for fear he'll get booed too.

how do you suggest they do that?

I have a right to cuss out the mentally handicaped kid at the grocery store for not bagging my groceries quick enough. But my right, doesn't make me less of an a-hole.

I did not like the signing, but I am not gonna take it out on Jones. I want him to have a career year and help the Cubs win the world series. I think the best way to do that is make him feel at home, letting him know we are behind him. Cubs players have enough pressure playing for this city with the media attention, for Cubs fans to boo J Jones after 13 AB is completely short-sighted.

I never said it didn't. People have a right to be a-holes, too. Are you suggesting we start handing out fines for people booing too early in the season?

This is an entertainment industry.

Hendry's signing of Jones is not good entertainment.

As paying customers, we have the right to express our thoughts on subpar goods. Now perhaps booing Jones for getting the contract isn't appropriate, but it's the only readily available mode of recourse we have to express ourselves.

And how would that let Jim Hendry know what we're upset about?

Maybe we really wanted Furcal. Maybe we don't like the Jones signing. Maybe we don't like the Eyre signing. Maybe we don't like Brandon Sing making the team.

For better or worse, this is the easiest way to push our opinions accross.

Do you want Hendry to make decisions based on fan emotion?

Fines? Are you kidding? I'm suggesting we don't boo because booing isn't warranted in this situation. I want Jacque Jones to succeed, and I think the best way for him to succeed is for him to not get treated like complete sh-t for making an out.

It's also the easiest way to make us look like a bunch of petulant, whiny, a-holes. The guy has had 12 ABs. 12. Booing him now is ignorant.

I'd rather they don't boo too. But from the sound of it, they aren't listening to us
