You hate to see something like that happen to a class guy like Mariotti. I'm eagerly awaiting MLB's letter to Skip Bayless regarding his general schmuckitude.

Don't they say theres no such thing as bad publicity.I think it would be better not even acknowledging him.

The number of people who hear about this story is going to be lower than the number of people who read Mariotti (it's sad that it's greater than zero), I'd imagine. I don't think it's going to give him too much free publicity. Afterall, he's on ESPN spewing garbage every day.

Mariotti is a loser. I don't understand why the Cubs and White Sox would take the time to write the Suntimes about this issue that involves Bud Selig. I do agree with Jay on one Baseball in general has to take some heat for letting steroid use getting out of control in the 90's. Didn't the owner of the WWE and such get torn to sheds by the media once wrestlers started dropping like flies. When some of these players don't make it past the age of 45 maybe the issue will be taken more seriously. Ken Camanti won't be the last.

Not that I disagree with the point in general, but Caminiti had a whole lot of contributing factors besides steroids involved in his demise. I guess we'll have to wait and see if guys like McGwire, Palmeiro, and Sosa have problems in the next 10 years or so.

I think most of those wrasslers bit it because of addictions to pain killers, coke, and extremely skank women.

If that were true, everyone who played for the '86 Mets would have died by now.

I don't particularly like Mariotti. I'm assuming that Mariotti criticized baseball for not acting sooner about steroids. If this is the case the I have to agree with Mariotti on this issue. Steroids were banned in the United States as well as in the other professional sports well before they were banned in baseball. I understand that Selig was trying to get fans interested in the game again and he let the steroids go because of it. But Selig has to take accountability for not stopping the problem sooner. Selig always let Donald Fehr run the CBA discussions and usually ended up losing because of it. I'm not saying that, had I been commishioner, I would have institued a steroid program earlier. All I'm saying is that Selig needs to say "yes I ignored the problem for the good of the game" because I think that's why he did it. And I think that is Mariotti's point. As for the MacPhail and Reinsdorf, they shouldn't be saying anything because they sure as hell didn't say anything about instituting steroid testing because they were too busy raking in the money from all of the home runs. So they have no right to criticize Mariotti when they were part of the problem also.

Who's Mark Buehrle?

I think it's some sort of Polish sausage topped with sauerkraut and Limberger cheese.

Once again, Mariotti garners attention for himself, and therefore success as a columnist. He wins because nobody can stop talking about him.

I have to ask if you read the link provided in the first post? If what is said in the link it true it sounds like Selig try to get steriod testing back in 1994 and couldn't because of the MLBPA. It dosen't sound like he ignored the problem for the "good of the game" but had to strong of opposition from the MLBPA to get any thing done.

Why do people, especially Reinsdorf and MacPhail bother to read this guy and put any stock in what he has to say?

He clearly went to the Skip Bayless, Woody Paige, Jason Whitlock and Dan LeBatard school of journalism. Know you're a mediocre writer so take the contrarian view on nearly every issue and criticize WHENVER possible to get a rise out of as many as possible. That contrarian view leads you to ESPN chats, radio shows and television spots. (For Whitlock the clincher is "play race card whenever possible).

Honestly, would people even bother to read him at all if it wasn't to bash or criticize? Have you EVER read a piece by Mariotti and thought, "what an intelligent, well-written piece?" Lately, I just glimpse at the headline and chuckle.

Simple Chicago journalism....what team has more fan support than any other??? Obviously it's the Cubs....how can we get a rise from as many of the Chicago sport fan base as possible? Bash and criticize the majority of the Chicago sport fan base to in an effort to get more readers....that simple.
