This writer speculates that the Yankees could try to trade for Kerry this July.

NY Post

Contenders with aggressive GMs will use established performers from areas of strength to address weaknesses. So watch for the A's moving Barry Zito and the White Sox dealing either Jon Garland or Freddy Garcia from their deep rotations, and the Dodgers moving a closer, either Eric Gagne or Danys Baez. Ken Griffey, Todd Helton and - of course - Manny Ramirez will be dangled, and don't be surprised if the Yankees gamble on Kerry Wood as a reliever. With all the media bashing of the Yankees' rotation, it is the set-up corps to Mariano Rivera that is the worst facet of the team.

The most interesting names on the market will be Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis. The Marlins will decide it is not worthwhile to pay them a combined $15 million in 2007. Instead, they will conclude their fire sale with an eye on adding to what already is one of the majors' best prospect stockpiles.

I don't think Kerry would waive his NTC to go to NYC.

Agreed. And the Fish would have to be on crack to deal Cabrera and Willis. They might never recover.

NY media seems to always think that players and teams are just waiting to facilitate the Yankees' wishes.

And The Yanks have nothing the Marlins want, and certainly not nearly enough for Willis and Cabrera. There are probably a couple dozen teams who have more to offer.

Cabrera and Willis could be moved because of their cost, but damn sure not to New York because they'll want cheap Superstar caliber players. They're going to want someone that is still a year removed from Arbitration.

Very true, but this isnt the first time we've heard that rumor. It seems like there may be something to it. I dont know if I understand it fully, as I havent taken the time to do more then skim a couple articles about it. But as I understand it, it has something to do with If they cannot get a new stadium deal to bring in new revenue, they may need to trade Willis/Cabrera to clear up some cash.

I agree.

Wood's value is seriously undermined by his contract and injury history. Trading him would be dumb unless we somehow managed to get good/great prospects in return, which the Yankees don't possess (Hughes in an injury nightmare waiting to happen).

If Wood pitches good this year, then the option will be picked up b/c the sizable buyout is already a sunk cost.

From today's Newsday Article

In South Florida, 22-year-old stud Miguel Cabrera doesn't fit with Joe Girardi's hustling Marlins and might emerge as the most likely superstar to hear his name at trade deadline time. "It almost looks like he's trying to get traded," one AL exec speculated. Not that his superstar attitude or slightly out-of-shape physique will discourage anyone. The AL exec said, "I'd take him in a heartbeat." But as another exec pointed out, "It may be hard for Florida to get enough for him."

Pie, Marshall, Murton, and Gallagher can all go for Cabrera.

I would LOVELOVELOVE to have Cabrera.

Hopefully in their travels during the WBC Cabrera and Z became the best of friends, and now Cabrera desperatley wants to rejoin his friend in chicago. Or something.

If the mods dont mind i'm going to start a new thread focused on the Cabrera part of the news...

Maybe NY can pay for a new stadium. Is that a legal transaction?

Willis and Cabrera for a 40,000 seat stadium. If you count the stadium cost as part of the Yanks payroll it would be over 1 billion dollars, only a slight increase in their current payroll.

What do the Marlins need two more outfielders for? They need a frontline 2B prospect, pitching and possibly a catcher.

Yup. We're just not a good fit, besides the farm depth issue.

Hendry might like Cabrera, but he doesn't have the players to get him.

From a baseball only perspective it may be a good move. But I don't want him on this team, not with that attitude.

He may only be 22-23 years old but I already see the makings of a clubhouse cancer. Many of you may be astounded by this, but I'd rather have a team with players I can root for (ala the Bulls) than to have a hugely successful team largely due to the play of a selfish, egomaniacal star (Bonds or Sosa).

I want this team to win BADLY, just not at any cost.

Outside of Cano, all the Yanks have is uber-expensive players and riff raff.

You are forgetting about the big Wanger!

I don't think it would take quite that much. Especially if Murton has a good year.

???

Pitching is the one thing they picked up a TON of over the winter.

They probably have more top pitching prospects than any other organization.

Olsen

Vargas

Johnson

Nolasco

Petit

Sanchez

And there is more where that came from.

How many of them project to be front of the rotation starters? Quantity isn't quality, although the Marlins have shown the ability to identify and develop good pitching throughout the years.

If the Marlins don't move to a market more capably of supporting a higher payroll (i.e. keeping Willis and Cabrera), Willis is out the door and the Marlins are left with a bunch of back of the rotation guys in their rotation. Not good.
