That signing doesn't really change his availability that much, if at all.

Yup. The Cubs signed Farnsy a few weeks before they traded him last year.

Not that I think that the Reds are going to trade Dunn, but the signing doesn't really mean anything one way or the other.

Unless the contract contains a no trade clause 8)

While Krivsky's comments seem to lend credence that Dunn is part of their plans, that contract doesn't do anything to address whether Dunn is in the long term plans. It saves the Reds some money this year, while likely giving Dunn some additional money next season. The 13 million dollar option for the third year which would have been his first year of free agency would make him very attractive to some teams.

In my opinion, this increases his value as there is some cost certainty. The fact that he's being paid so much less this year makes me believe the Reds could deal him, but that they've reduced the urgency. They'll likely hold on to him for now, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him made available in July or next offseason.

I definitely doubt he's traded soon...but I don't put it outside the realm of possibility.

I've seen some pundits speculate that the signing of Hatteberg gave them flexibility to trade Dunn.

Alright this love affair with Dunn is crazy anyway. They were not, are not, and will not trade him within the division, unless we give them Zambrano or St. Louis gives them Pujols. When trading for prospects it makes much more sense to go outside the division, because all prospects are a risk of some form or another and nothing is a sure bet with them. So even if the Cubs offered Pie, Hill, Guzman, and Dopirak, that means nothing in terms of results when those players make the ML level. The Reds on the other hand would be giving a ML proven player to a division rival. If they are going to risk taking prospects in return for a player of his caliber, they will risk in in the other league, or at the very least to a team in a different division.

That would be like saying that the signing of John Mabry gives the Cubs the flexibility to trade D Lee. Hatteberg is not starting 1B material any more - he was out OPS'd by NEIFI last year (Hatteberg - .677, Neifi - .681)

i don't know what the big deal was about dunn anyway, he's fat, he's a poor defender, he's not clutch, he's terrible on the hit and run, he doesn't bunt, he doesn't shake things up on the basepaths, and he strikes out too much! who cares if he walks alot, walks don't win games-bunting wins games, small ball wins games.

besides, dunn wants to raise his family in cincinnati, which has great schools, the weather is terrific, and the quality of life is amazing. why would he want to think about leaving? it's likely he never considered chicago as a destination, i bet his agent just told hendry to go "take a walk".

That's a brilliant double entendre.

A couple years ago it was Pudge, last year it was Beltran, this year it was Dunn... who will it be next year?

The player that alot of Cubs fans are going to be enamored with for 2006 will be....Carlos Quentin or Conor Jackson.

Now if the Cubs could EVER develop a Adam Dunn/Brad Wilkerson type ballplayer (Matt Murton ), maybe the Cubs fans would have such a drool on for certain players.
