Look for the Reds to make at least one trade before spring training under interim general manager Brad Kullman, most likely involving outfielder Austin Kearns. New owner Bob Castellini wants action, and Kearns remains the team's most marketable player.

The Royals, Cardinals, Cubs and Nationals are among the teams that have had a long-standing interest in Kearns. The Indians recently offered right-hander Jake Westbrook for Kearns, but former GM Dan O'Brien said no to the deal. Those talks could be revisited now that O'Brien is gone.

The Indians wanted Kearns to fill the outfield void that could be created by their trade of Coco Crisp to the Red Sox. But the Reds evidently weren't sold on Westbrook, who was 15-15 with a 4.49 ERA last season after going 14-9 with a 3.38 ERA in 2004.

I'm sure Hendry will be on the phone to the Reds in the next couple of weeks.

If the Cubs could get Keans would that mean Jones would be a bench guy?

Does Kearns make more than $5 mil a year? Does he have crow's feet?

Can we stuff his pants with money and paint worry lines on his face?

the reds should have jumped on the Jack Westbrook to get him for Kearns who can't stay healthy and hasn't shown much at the major league level a cheap starter like Westbrook would have been a nice net for them.

why oh why didn't O'Brien get fired in October?

/i know, i know, new ownership wasn't in place yet. It was more of a lament than a question

I never wanted kearns. But If Kearns means no Jones then where the hell do I sign.

No thanks I'd rather keep Z or Prior.

I really doubt the likes of Z or Prior will be discussed in that deal. And if the reds GM brings either of them up, I'd hope Hendry would laugh them off the phone.

It'd be worth dealing for Kearns just so he can't destroy our pitchers anymore. Of course, if he couldn't face Cub pitchers anymore, he wouldn't be much of a hitter.

A lot of profane gestures have been exchanged between Kearns and the RF bleachers over the years, too. I don't really want that to end.

Welcome to the board.

Thank you.

I like Jones as a person and as a player, but like Kearns, he has something to prove. Besides, our bench is totally lacking in any semblance of power.

If the Reds would take a 27 year-old Westbrook, who posted ERA+ of 91 in 2005, 134 in 2004, and 98 in 2003, why couldn't we build a deal around a 23-year-old Jerome Williams who posted ERA+ of 100 in 2005, 105 in 2004, and 130 in 2003?

I know that Westbrook's peripherals look better than Williams, but Williams is older and has put up some better seasons, including a better performance in the most recent season.

Why not offer Williams and Wellemeyer for Kearns? Murton, Kearns, and Jones could split time in the outfield.

I'm not the biggest fan of Kearns (I think it is well known that I'd prefer Dunn... :D ), but Kearns is only 25 and should have a few good years ahead of him.

Kearns is NOT better than Jones.

They would make a good platoon, however.

i could get into bed with that

I could see the Cubs trading Murton and a pitcher for Kearns.

Hope not. Right now Murton, IMO, has as much potential for production as Kearns does.

Personally, I don't think I would trade Williams straight up for Kearns at this point.

Because Williams is better than Kearns?
