Braves agreed to terms with LHP Mike Remlinger on a minor league contract.

Leo Mazzone, who probably was greatly responsible for turning Remlinger's career around back in 1999, is no longer around, so it looks like something of a long shot that the Braves will get anything out of the soon-to-be 40-year-old. At best, maybe he'll be an adequate middle reliever.

He cannot get lefthanded hitters out anymore. Dont see how he will make the team.

He could never get lefthanded hitter out. That wasn't his area. He was a relief pitcher that should be used against right handers.

I hate seeing careers end like this. One day a man's a starter... and another day he's having trouble getting into the majors as a reliever. :(

Good move on Remlinger's part. He'll have such a good year this year with Mazzone, that he'll be able to con some team next year into signing him to another 3 year deal.

Not quite, unless the Braves plan on shipping him to Baltimore.

So, let me get this straight. Of the 46 players to play for the 2005 Cubs....

-3 veterans were forced to take minor league deals (Remlinger, Hollandsworth, Grieve)

-4 were forced to take severe paycuts and 1-year deals (Garciaparra, Lawton, Hawkins, Borowski)

-2 couldn't or can't be traded for anything close to full value (Patterson, Walker)

-3 won't play baseball in the United States in 2006 (Macias, E. Wilson, McClain)

-3 will probably never see the majors again (Fox, Bartosh, Koronka)

-2 were dumped for PsTBNL (Van Buren, Leicester)

-5 are spot fillers on 40-man rosters (Dubois, Fontenot, Soto, Wellemeyer, Theriot) with minimal upside

-1 didn't even make a 40-man roster (Greenberg)

That's 1/2 of the players to play for the Cubs....and that list doesn't include guys like Burnitz, Perez, and Rusch who inexplicably got raises.

Hendry is well on his way to compiling a legendary track record with big-money relief signings. It's become the reliever's kiss of death to sign for 3+ mil. with the Cubs. I can't wait to see how Howry and Eyre turn out.

You should have told Baker that.

Would this be a normal breakdown for any team.....or is this unique to the Cubs?

Either way....that's a VERY sobering little list.

I hated that Mercker complained about what Chip said about Oswalt. Thats what made me hate him and freaking glad he's gone.

I don't see the problem. I complained about Chip a lot too. I met Mercker in Houston and felt as if I were touched by the divine. He's a great guy. I think Stone was more at fault in those situations than Mercker. Stone's an arrogant SOB and most people know it. Stone's comments since leaving the Cubs are a wonderful indicator of how petty he is.

I gotta agree with vance on this one. mercker was just a normal guy without any of the ego I would have expected from a major league player.
