Wow, people actually complimenting JH.

When people rip on him its not because they are against him just because they are, its because of the moves he makes that they do not agree with.

For what we are paying Miller it is worth it but I am skeptical that he will ever be as good as he was when he played for the Astros. Low risk though so I like this move.

I see Miller as a one inning pitcher and once he's on the 25 man Baker will run him down and he'll be on the DL in a month and out for the season. IMO it's a waste of money.

Let me just say that I think this could be a very, very good move. Last season, Miller was bad, but he was trying to pitch through an injury. He should have had surgery in 2004, but elected for rest and rehabilitation instead.

The 4 seasons preceeding last year, Miller has been very good.

In 2001, he started 32 games with a 3.40 ERA (134 ERA+)

In 2002, he started 26 games with a 3.28 ERA (130 ERA+)

In 2003, he started 33 games with a 4.13 ERA (107 ERA+)

In 2004 before shutting it down, 15 GS with a 3.35 ERA (129 ERA+).

Those are great numbers. If Miller can regain anything of his old self, the Cubs will have a steal. He'll be 29 next season, so there's no reason to think he can't find it again.

A healthy Miller combined with a healthy Kerry Wood gives the Cubs incredible depth in their starting pitching which creates any number of options regarding midseason trades.

While I have been roundly critical of Hendry this offseason, he deserves kudos for this move.

I guess I need to get the crashed and burned Wade Miller BandWGN to the shop so it can be up and running by May 15th.

i like this. a lot. would have liked an option, but i'll live.

The best thing about no option in the contract, as opposed to the Dempster and Williamson deals, is that the Cubs and Miller both must feel that he is going to be a major contributor this year.

I'm not so sure. Ponson could be healthier since it's hard to miss time with pulled fat.

I got $100 that says that pulled fat wins more games than Kerry Wood this year.

Make it ERA+ and you might have a deal. Wins are a poor indicator of pitching performance.

Why is everything about Wood? The comparisons were Miller and Ponson.

I would submit to you that a certain beat writer, who happens to frequent our board and occasionally chat with us, was probably involved somehow someway. If I recall, Miller's name first surfaced in said beat writer's column in late December. I bet Miller wasn't even on Hendry's radar until he read that in the beat writer's column. Just a theory mind you.

Something tells me that putting an oft injured starter with Baker doesn't exactly equal success.

Having said that, Hendry made the right move. Miller @ $1m is a good signing, and if he is truly healthy, gives us depth, meaning Guzman and Hill don't have to be counted on as heavily. It also, as someone else mentioned, gives us flexibility via the trade market.

If Hendry needed to read Bruce Miles's column to know that Wade Miller was available, then he's the worst GM in the world.

His job is to know who's available and if he's worth getting. Jeeze.

I was just going to say... if that is the case, we are in alot more trouble than we ever thought.

Man, this is the most positive posting on the board in quite some time. I like the signing simply for that reason.....but I also love low-risk, high-reward pickups. Dempster has worked out well, Williamson hopefully will rebound this year and Miller gives us much needed depth in the rotation.

Its one of Hendry's stronger qualities.

At $1MM, Wade Miller doesn't need to start games to be valuable to the Cubs. If he's simply a serviceable middle reliever that joins the team in May or June and gives the team 40-50 decent innings, he's easily worth a million bucks in today's market. And if he's healthy at all, he's certainly capable of that at the very least; as someone else correctly noted, Miller has NASTY stuff. When they first joined the Houston rotation, more people were higher on Miller long-term than they were on Oswalt (I lived in Houston at the time).

The only way this deal could have been better is if the Cubs got a cheap 2007 option along with it, but so long as they can offer arby and get a draft pick, that's still OK. If he does a decent job in middle relief, he'd surely be a Type B free agent, and that gets us a 2nd round pick.

How about VORP since it takes in account the number of innings pitched? I say loser has to upload a high quality picture of himself in the oppositions hat.

Oh and no defacing that hat either.

You actually think Ponson will have a higher VORP than Wood. But how about a better bet. If Wood has a higher VORP you purchase me the Cubs hat of my choice, if Ponson has the higher VORP, I'll purchase you the Cards hat of your choice.
