I like the signing. Low-risk, high-reward possibility. Probably the best free agent signing this offseason. By far. And if that ain't a sad commentary on our offseason, well, I don't know what is.

Until May, we could have a rotation of:

Prior/Z/Maddux/Williams/Rusch

After May, we could have a rotation of:

Prior/Z/Wood/Miller/Maddux

or

Z/Maddux/Williams/Rusch/Hill/Guzman (insert other name here)

Hopefully not, but with our past history, Prior/Wood/Miller are reserving their plane tickets to Iowa/West Tenn/Daytona.

I wish there was more to it then one year. With Wood being a FA next year, an option would have been nice, but oh well.

Excellent signing. The Cubs are probably the only team in the major leagues that need a "seventh starter" and now we have a pretty decent one in Miller.

This is what Rotoworld said on 1/19:

The Red Sox have some interest in re-signing Wade Miller, who was non-tendered by the club last month.Miller threw Monday for the first time since shoulder surgery and hopes to return a month into the season. He's seeking a deal similar to the one the Red Sox gave him last year: one year, guaranteed, at $1.5 million with the chance to make another $3 million in bonuses tied to innings and days on the active roster. Unless the Red Sox trade a pitcher or two, he'll probably head elsewhere as a free agent.

I wonder what kind, if any, incentives the Cubs included?

Hows this for a potential '07 rotation??

Zambrano

Prior

Hill

Guzman / Williams

Miller/Marmol

Some nice upside there without some additions which there will be next winter.

I'm thinking:

Zambrano

Prior

Wood

Miller

Guzman / Hill / Marmol

Jerome Williams is not in my immediate plans for the rotation. I'd trade him if he's got any real value.

I really don't get JH. He makes a nice signing like this, yet also signed folks like Howry, Eyre, Neifi! and Jones to much more expensive deals.

What's not to get? Howry, Eyre, Perez, and Jones don't bring with them multiple season-ending injuries from their past.

Where's Maddux? I don't think he's going to the pen, or I sure as hell hope not. He's terrible in the first inning IIRC.

I like this signing, A++, wish he would do it again. Z/Prior/Wood/Miller/Maddux would be my guess. Williams will be traded some time, and they'll probably use Hill out of the pen or as a spot starter, like Guzman.

Good signing, but I'm not going to get too excited until he proves that he's healthy. I wouldn't expect him to be as good as he was in Houston.

Last year you could tell he just wasn't there yet. Hopefully he can recover enough to be effective.

They are talking about 2007. Of course, Wood's mutual option would have to be exercised to see him too.
