Wanted to get your thoughts.

What was the best one for you?

What was the funniest one to you?

Wanted your thoughts.....

Man I miss Harry...... :)

Harry would (poop) a brick if he saw this sorry-ass bunch of losers today, calling up to the booth and blaming the announcers for their poor play.

Anyway, I wish I would have heard this live, but I guess one of Harry's most memorable quotes was this:

The WGN camera focused on a young couple sitting under a blanket on a cold day in the bleachers. Harry commented "They have a system worked out. He kisses her on the strikes, and she kisses him on the balls."

Uproarious laughter could be heard as everyone in the booth busted up. Harry finally realized what he said, simply replied "Oh" and went back to announcing the game.

That is a hilarious quote. Would have loved to been watching the game when he said that one.

In a similar vein there's the famous blooper: "Heyy we see Marla Collins(*) for the first time without shorts on", followed by hysterical laughter in the background.

Luckily WGN Radio has preserved that audio clip and others for posterity:

R.I.P. Harry ... we all miss you.

We really need a replacement for Marla.

My pick is a bitter moment - on the last day of the 1995 season, Harry wept in the booth as he and Steve completed the broadcast by looking back on the year, which was rotten from Memorial Day through Labor Day but provided enough greatness in the beginning and at the end to leave everyone depressed as hell once it became clear that things wouldn't work out for us.

It was one of many moments in which Harry proved that his love for the team was as genuine as that of the fans.

what I always remember is his utter disgust when he would say when a cub came up with a runner on third and less than two outs

"He POPPED it up."

often followed by "that wouldn't be a home run in a phone booth!".

I also remember Harry often over-enunciating last names w/3+ syllables: "here's Luis Vis-guy-ee-no" or "Ken Cama-nee-ti .. good lookin young ballplayer."

Harry was never my favorite, but his attempts to pronounce Grudzielanek were comedy gold.

Generally, I think people doing Harry Caray impersonations are funnier than Harry was himself, but that's just me.

My favorite...

First, I have to set it up...often when a batter strikes out, the catcher will rifle the ball to the third baseman, and he'll throw the ball around the infield. And that's what happened...

For Carey, however, he called something like, "a hot smash off the bat of x, snared by y at 3rd base. Bang bang play. Holy Cow!".

It was left to Steve Stone to say sheepishly, "ahhh, Harry, I think the batter stuck out, and the catcher threw the ball to the 3rd baseman".

Maybe that's sad? But, if you liked Harry (and I did), you just had to laugh.

Will Farell's imitations of him were gold.

My favorite...

Bases loaded, two outs, ninth inning, Cubs up one.

Harry - "Doesn't anyone pop up anymore?"

Batter (i forget who) pops up

Harry "They do, they do...Cubs Win, Cubs Win."

I still use the "Doesn't anybody pop up anymore" line.

Any of you remember the Rey Sanchez play? A guy popped a ball up to Rey Sanchez at short and Harry said something to the effect of you'd never ever see Rey Sanchez drop an easy catch like this. Then, Rey then proceeded to drop the ball. Then, they kept showing the replay of it with Harry saying that over and over again. That sure was some great timing Harry...

I thought they were crap.

Will Ferrell was doing an imitation of a guy doing an imitation of a guy doing Harry Caray. I have seen far, far better impersonations.

I have to say I agree -- the best by far I've ever heard was Ed Volkman's imitation. He does Harry better than Harry; just spot on, right down to essential details like random throat clearings.

Concurrence. And he's spawned every average person to do awful imitations of Haray as well.

according to Stone's book, "Where's Harry," just about all of the "stupid old man" routines were planned out by harry. I think he even planned out how they'd do the "steve's ceeegar is awful" bit.

Harry new that the product on the field would never sell. . . .

"Here's a guy, Danny Jackson....who's 0 for 8 in his last 10 starts...and he's making 2.2 million a year!! He's gotta have a ski-mask on when he goes to pick up his check"

"There's a guy who grew up in the Dominican Republic, or Puerto Rico, or one of those Caribbean islands where the sun shines 362 days a year....and he loses a pop up, in THE SUN!! I just can't figure it out."

The one that sticks out in my mind...

Sammy is on first, and there is a balk...Sammy starts to walk towards second, and Harry starts literally screaming "What's Thammy Doing!?!?!" "He's gonna get picked off!!"

Stone politely tells Harry there was a balk while Harry was not paying attention and talking his usual hilarious nonsense.

Harry made me a Cub fan...

"Where's Harry" is a great read by the way. He led an amazing life...

I do believe the first player he commented on losing the ball in the sun was jorge orta. who was a lousy 2nd baseman. so i think it was kind of harrys way of calling out a player for not being very good in a humorous sort of way.

probably my all time harry qoute came when he was still with the white sox. chet lemon(who was probably the worst baserunner in the history of baseball when he was on the white sox) was caught in a rundown between 2nd and 3rd and harry says "crimony, he looks like a squirrel on the freeway"

I have to say as great as i always thought harry was with the cubs, he and peirsall were just about as entertaining of a broadcast as i have ever heard when they did the white sox games

Yeah I remember sigining "Take me out..." at Comiskey with Harry. Good times.

I like it when he called Ryne Sandberg, Ryne Santo. I could feel Steve Stone in the booth want to correct him, but he never did, that I can recall.

I miss him.
