Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but i read on ITI that ESPN1000 is reporting we have an interest in Hidalgo, 1 year deal? Puke.......

I don't see this as the worst news in the world. It depnds on the offer, his health, and how we would like to use him.

Hidalgo would be a very good bench option and plays very good defense. He would make a great 4th outfielder.

Agreed, I would much rather see Hidalgo than Grissom.

He would make a decent platoon option for Jones (he doesn't have tradition LR splits, but hits lefties better than Jones), but also a very easy excuse for Dusty to bench Murton. He'd automatically become the best bench player, which doesn't say much considering how bad the bench is right now.

Hidalgo doesn't have much of a platoon split. Over the last three years he's been a little better against RHP than LHP.

In 2003 and 2004 he hit better vs LHP, and significantly better than Jones vs LHP. 2005 was a huge drag on his LHP split, but it was only 83 AB.

I would not mind the Cubs signing Hidalgo, he would be a good 4th outfielder. That means no Grissom. Enough said.

I would not count out Grissom if Hidalgo is here.

Assuming Walker is traded, the bench looks like Hairston/Perez, Mabry, Blanco. That could still leave room for Grissom and Hidalgo, especially if they finally decide to go with 6 bench players, leaving room for another middle infielder.

Blanco - C

Hairston/Perez - MI

Mabry - Corner OF/IF

Grissom - OF

Hidalgo - Corner OF

random middle infielder

I could see that happening.

I guess i was expecting more of this off-season, how does he hit LHP before last years injuries?? He might be a nice platoon with Jones? can anyone confirm the report?.

I just listened to ESPM AM 1000's sports report and there was no mention of this rumor. It doesn't prove/disprove anything but they didn't mention it in the most recent update.

The Cubs will most likely open the season with 12 pitchers which means, 4 bench options.

12 pitchers means 5 bench options.

Did they say they would open with 12, or are people assuming because that is what they did last year? I feel they went with 12 partly because Dusty didn't know what to expect from all the kid relievers. I think he might be more comfortable with the 4 veterans (Dempster, Howry, Eyre, Williamson) and the crop of kids being more experienced. He might go with 12, which would of course be stupid, and therefore the likely Cubs option, but I'm not certain he will.

I think every team breaks camp with 12 pitchers. Starters usually do not pitch 9 innings in their starts, for the first couple of weeks.

I don't think so. You don't need starters to go 9 to justify going with 6 relievers instead of 7. There are enough off days early on to spread out the appearances. Dusty is a guy who will go with the hot hand everyday until he fails, and sit the last guy for 2 weeks at a time. It makes no sense to go with 12 pitchers, unless you have a great lineup and can afford minimal bench help.

Who's Murton? I've never heard that name before.

I would be all for giving Hidalgo a look. He would immediately become the best defensive outfielder on the team by a long shot, and he has a cannon.

He has always crushed at Wrigley(I know I know no Blauser etc.. references please), and if he could return to anything close to his pre 04 numbers he would be nice in RF. Didn't he get shot in the off season following 03?

Did Hendry find his Jermaine Dye clone here??

Over the weekend, Hendry made it sounds like its was more circumstances that the team carried 12 pitchers all of last year. Its inexcusable to do that again when one of the major focuses of this off season was to improve the bullpen. This bench is already shaping up to be extremely mediocore, they need as many bats as possible.

Definitely like to see Hidalgo signed, he's only 30, had very nice numbers against lefties as recent as 2004 (860 OPS). I know I know, he might take time away from Murton. But we can't just not see what he's got because our manager is a tool.

Hey, first post here! :D

The circumstances Hendry was referring to were the plethora of injuries to Wood, Prior, et al. Given all the outings from young arms untested at the MLB level, and from older arms that had failed to stay healthy at the MLB level, Hendry wanted an extra bullpen arm for all the short outings that he expected from the situation.

As far as Hidalgo is concerned, what is his injury history? Is there reason to believe that injuries are the reason for his decline over the past 2 years? He's only 30, so it shouldn't be an age issue... I'd love for the Cubs to take a chance on him with a one-year deal.

Welcome, Shawn.

He hurt his wrist and missed the last 2 months this year, but other than that, he's been pretty healthy in recent history. He's definitely worth a look. He's had great seasons and he's had really poor seasons. Even if he has another poor one, he's still a good bench player with tons of power. If he has a good-to-great season, he's the 3rd best offensive player on the team. And at 30, there's a pretty good chance that he has a good season or 2 left in him somewhere.
