I heard a rumor that Griese to the Bengals is a done deal. Monday's visit to the Bears is just a formality.

Again, just a rumor.....

Non of these "non-signings" are anything I'm getting worked up over or anything, but sure seems like ppl are like "oh yeah, I'll come be all nice and visit the Bears, but no way I'm signing with them"... :?

I was hoping the Bears where going to add another big time defensive player if we couldn't get another WR threat but this offseason is looking more and like the Cubs offseason.

I'm not even sure the Bears really need another WR. Mush is signed to a long term contract, Gage established himself as a good possession receiver towards the end of the season, Berrian was our BEST offensive player once he returned, Bradley was coming on strong before his injury, and the Bears are high on Airese Currie (although he's still a big ?). Although the position was an overall weakness for a large portion of the season, it could easily be a position of strength for next year. However a lot of that hinges on the health of Bradley and the team's assesment of Currie. I could be mistaken, but I don't think there are many teams (if any) teams who carry 6 receivers (although Berrian can double as a return man as well). Health provided the team may be better served upgrading elsewhere.

IMO, the Bears points of emphasis need to be TE (draft), OL (youth and depth via draft), OLB (draft), a backup Qb (via FA), and CB (someone who doesn't make as many mistakes as Tillman). Tight end, CB, and a backup QB should be top priorities, where the other two are more for adding depth.

I disagree with your assessment of Gage. He's a bad football player.

Bears sign Griese to a 5-year deal:

chicagosports.com"]Brian Griese has agreed to terms on a five-year contract that should keep him in a Bears uniform through the 2010 season, according to a source close to the player. Financial details weren't yet immediately available.

...............

Griese is expected to supplant Kyle Orton as Rex Grossman's backup. Given Grossman's injury history, Griese also felt comfortable enough with the situation in Chicago to possibly start games. Griese has completed 63.1 percent of his passes with 103 touchdowns and 78 interceptions. The former Michigan star is known as an accurate passer and cerebral player.

Huh.

I'm guessing, based upon everything Smith and Angelo have said, that Grossman is and will be the starting QB this season. I think this is a good move overall for the Bears. I don't know if there are many better options out there to be a back up QB. Orton has proved that he can be a 2nd QB if necessary. I feel comfortable heading into the season with Grossman, Griese, and Orton as the Bears 3 QB's.

I like this signing, I don't like the length, but it is nice knowing that there is a solid quarterback coming off the bench for when Grossman goes down in the preseason.

Don't worry about the length, it's an NFL contract. # of years doesn't mean anything. Great signing for DA Bears! Now let's get Charles Woodson (isn't he a FA?) and Leonard Pope.

Don't be suprised if Griese makes the Bears decision on who to start @ QB a difficult one. Griese is more experienced. Time for Grossman to step it up. I do like the signing depending on how much $ is guaranteed.

No TY to Woodson.

Griese plans on competing with Grossman for the starting job...

Brian Griese agreed to a five-year deal with the Chicago Bears on Tuesday, adding depth at quarterback and a potential challenger to starter Rex Grossman.

"I don't think there's any question he's going into the position to compete for the job," Griese's agent Ralph Cindrich said. "That was made clear."

All that I could find so far:

ChicagoSports.com"]His contract is worth $6 million in the first year, including a $5 million signing bonus, and contains incentives based on playing time that escalate the value if he becomes the starter.

Griese's agent was on the Score a couple of hours ago and he said the Bears made it clear it's Rex's job to lose.

Is Kyle gone or should they keep Blake? I think Blake is better.

I'd rather have Kyle and see if he can progress while being a third stringer.

Agreed. We already have a veteran QB on the team, no need for Blake anymore. However, go into camp with all four of them, incase one gets hurt.

Agreed it wouldn't hurt to have all four espcially in case of an injoury. I hope kyle out plays blake though we dont need another old guy.

I like the signing, I just hope it's a fair competition for the job. Is Grossman's ceiling (as far as production) equal to that of what Griese has been able to provide?

Apparently Azumah is expected to announce his retirement tomorrow. I just assumed he was going into free agency.

The Bears keep Idonije and the AP seems to think that the press conference about Azumah may be for a new contract:

AP"]CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bears matched the four-year offer sheet defensive lineman Israel Idonije signed with the Buffalo Bills.

They also scheduled a news conference for Thursday with cornerback Jerry Azumah. The team and Azumah's agent declined comment Wednesday on the news conference.
