Hall of Famer Sutter says relievers overlooked

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bruce Sutter, the newest member of baseball's Hall of Fame, says recognition of the importance of relief pitchers has been long overdue. "We're on the line every day," he told a news conference in New York on Wednesday, the day after becoming only the fourth reliever to be elected to the Hall of Fame. "The game is set up to get to us. It's a very important position," he added.

Sutter said there were other relievers that belonged in the Hall of Fame besides his predecessors Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley and knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm, "I wish I was going in with Lee Smith and Goose Gossage," he said about two other great relievers who were on the ballot but failed to win enough votes.

Sutter, whose Cooperstown plaque will show him wearing a St Louis Cardinals cap, helped change the status of relievers, who are now highly prized to preserve the lead at the end of a game.

"The Cubs gave me a chance to play, signed me as a free agent who was undrafted," Sutter said. "The first day I walked into Wrigley Field (in Chicago) was probably the best day of my life," he said. "But I guess people remember me with the Cardinals winning the World Series in 1982. I think my sons remember me most as a Cardinal."

I'll always remember him as a Cub when he first came up and his "amazing" new pitch that made hitter look like idiots at the plate.

He'll always be a Cub first and foremost to me and I hope Cub fans outnumber Card fans in Cooperstown this year when he's inducted!

He played longer as a Cub (5 years vs. 4 with the Cards) . . .

He pitched more innings as a Cub (491.6 vs. 395.5 with the Cards) . . .

He has more saves as a Cub (133 vs. 127 with the Cards) . . .

He was my favorite player as a kid and it angers me that he's going in the HoF as a Tard!

NEW YORK -- Bruce Sutter will enter the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 30 with the interlocking S, T and L of the St. Louis Cardinals on his cap, an official of the shrine in Cooperstown, N.Y., said on Wednesday.

"My sons remember me most as a Cardinal," Sutter said. "My one son is 26 years old and I don't think he's ever seen me without a beard. It's not as black as it used to be, but it's still there."

Sutter's career hit its zenith, though, when he helped the Cardinals defeat the Brewers in Game 7 of the 1982 World Series. Sutter pitched two hitless, shutout innings to earn his second save of the series and punched out Brewers center fielder Gorman Thomas to give the Cardinals their last World Series title.

"My family identifies with me throwing that last pitch to Gorman Thomas," Sutter said. "I'm certainly thankful for what the Cubs did for me. I respect their organization. It's the same way with the Atlanta Braves, an awfully fine organization. I respect everybody who's down there and that's still where I live today. But the Cardinals represent the best years of my career."

Oh well, afterall he did sport a moonshiner's beard, had some teeth issues and married an overweight unattractive woman - it probably makes sense that he will be representing St. Louis. :P

Can't blame him, the 1st thing that comes to mind when speaking of Sutter and the Cubs in the same sentence is Sandberg.

What a crock that he was elected and Blyleven and Santo still wait. Gossage deserved it more than Sutter.

This may be shocking to everyone, but the HOF values post-season performance over just about everything.

And the process isn't all that logical.

Sutter should check the back of his baseball card.

Heh. I think he's checking his fingers more than his baseball card. (1982 WS)

Then how does that explain Gary Carter in an Expos cap and Wade Boggs in a Red Sox cap? No matter what they say about it being the HOF's choice I think since it was almost a toss up they asked Sutter and went with his preference.

My most indelible memory of Sutter in a Cards cap is giving up the two dingers to Ryno. His most dominant years were with the Cubs.

Also, I have one question. When will the results of the Veterans Committee be known? Usually in March?

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the World Series a "TEAM GOAL", and the HOF a "Individual Goal" much like the Cy Young? I know people remember Sutter hugging Porter after winning the World Series, and I can understand that, but...if winning a World Series was a requirement to reach the HOF, then there would be NO CUBS in the HOF, then. To use the World Series as justification for wearing the Cards hat is simply wrong. If Sutter wanted to use his stats, that's one thing, but using the World Series is a slap in the face of the Cubs organization (rather they deserve or not is another story), for what they did for his career. In fact, I would prefer him using his stats as justification.

With that said, when Lee Smith makes the HOF, atleast we won't be having this conversation.

I guess he wants to be remembered for that dominant (4.70 ERA) WS performance. :?

Neither was close. Boggs played 11 seasons in Boston compared to just 5 with the Yankees and Carter played 12 seasons with Montreal to just 5 with the Mets.

And I don't believe the policy was in place when Carter was inducted.
