ESPN is blocked at my work. Can anyone give a quick synopsis? Thanks in advance.

All you need to know:

Police said Tuesday that the 50-year-old Reardon, retired since 1994 and sixth in career saves, walked into Hamilton Jewelers at the Gardens Mall on Monday and handed an employee a note saying he had a gun and the store was being robbed.

Reardon, who starred with the Montreal Expos, Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox, fled the store with $170 in cash.

Police found him at a nearby restaurant, recovered the stolen money and arrested him on armed robbery charges.

Reardon and his attorney claim it was due to him not taking his meds.

Yeah, it sucks when I forget to take my "don't rob stores" pills.

So do the cops who caught Reardon get credited for a save for recovering the cash?

The case isn't over yet, so it's just a hold. The district attorney's office needs to come in and close it out.

Maybe if Reardon gets Michael Jackson's attorney, the D.A.'s office will get stuck with a blown save.

And as we all know, defense is what brings wins.

I heard today that he's on several anti depressant medications and recently had a minor heart surgery....so, the medications combined may have caused him to act in a manner he wouldn't normally.

I'm getting kind of sick of the "he didn't take his meds" defense.

Can we get Dusty some heavy meds in the meantime?

Mental illness is a very legit reason why a person can do something irregular and it shouldn't be mocked.

I'm not mocking it, but if someone knows that they could act eratically if they don't take their meds, then they have an obligation to take them.

Didn't he recently lose a son to drug overdose. I am not excusing his actions but there nothing more tramatic than losing a child I feel sorry for him.

I feel for him as well, but that doesn't mean you can rob a jewelry store.

I understand and agree with your points. I just didn't want this thread to become a mental illiness bash fest.

I have all the sympathy in the world for the mentally ill. My mother worked for 25 years as a pharmacist in a state run mental health clinic.

What I have a problem with is those with illnesses know they need their meds. They are counseled ad nausem to take them.

Most of the meds they take have side effects. They can make you tired or sluggish. Many times these people who need these meds to keep them from being a menance to society stop taking them because they don't like the side effects. When they make this choice, they are knowingly putting society at risk. That's why I don't think "he stopped taking his meds" should be a valid excuse for criminal behavior.

That's cool about your mom. I certainly agree with your point.

I thought it was the medication he was taking that caused him to act irrationally. Apparently he has suffered severe depression since the death of his son, They had some doctors on some news analysis program last night saying that the anti-depressants he was taking could have made him manic and act irrationally. While I sympathize with Mr. Reardon, he must still be held accountable for his actions. Since he has no prior criminal record, and is in no financial difficulties (or so I have heard) I could see the charges be reduced so that he doesnt' spend anytime in jail. He is out right now on a $5000 signature bond but is confined at home with a monitoring device.

If the medication prescribed by a doctor was the cause for his irrational behavior should be really be held "accountable for his actions"?

That is something the courts will have to work out. If they totally let him off every crackpot will start using that as a defense and I don't think the court will want to set that kind of precedence. Just my opinion of how things will work out, not saying it is right or wrong, I am just saying. Even though the medication may have made him act irrationally I still feel there has to be some kind of personal accountability (Even if it is just community service or something of that nature)
