It's being reported on STL radio.

edit - For 3\15m

This proves in my mind that the Cardinals were after Jones for the same money (as was reported but denied by many at Cards Talk).

JJ himself, in his interview with Waddle, said the Cards were one of the teams that made him a offer.

I missed that, thanks!

So let me get this straight. The Cardinals offered basically the same money to Jones as the Cubs, and he took the Cubs offer?

Chalk one up for Dusty? What other absurd reason would a guy pick a team that is regressing over a team that consistently finishes in the top half of the standings if the money is the same?

From Juan Encarnacion's scouting report:

Encarnacion has good speed, but his basestealing totals have declined noticeably. He has above-average ability in right field and has been known to make the diving catch, but he still makes too many mistakes on routes and throws. He sometimes airmails the cutoff man, in part because he throws with just one finger.

That's pretty impressive, being able to throw with just one finger.

I noticed that both Jones and Encarnacion show up one each others 'similar batters' list on Baseball Reference. Who shows up as #1 for each? Jose Guillen, which is absolutely not very fascinating.

Not that I really care, but wouldn't the Cardinals have been much better off keeping Sanders and signing the non-tendered Junior Spivey to play 2nd base?

The sad thing is the Cardinals are the team that can justify one of these bums on their team. Their lineup is already better, their team is already better, they've had much more success and don't have as much money to spend on the roster.

Those would have been good moves for them.

Once he starts to struggle and hits 220 the best fans in the world will throw out a different finger.

Spivey is still an option! Although I don't understand why everyone is so down on Miles..I think he could be alright in STL. Encarnacion is younger than Sanders, I don't see that hurting them much either as JE could match Sanders output batting in the 6th hole of the Cards lineup. The guy does well with RISP and with Pujols, Edmonds, Rolen in front of him, there will be plenty of opportunity. Plus he puts the ball into play more than Sanders.

miles is a leadoff hitter that never walks, ever.

.255/.284/.337 for his career on the road. I'm always the first one screaming that road #s for Colorado players aren't a player's true ability, but even regressing that a ton, you still have a horrible hitter.

Must be nice to be the Cards.

All they have to do is reach out and sign some underachieving position player, or another shaky pitcher, and watch as they magically turn to gold playing in St. Louis.

I like Jocketty, but he lives the life of Riley. If the Cubs signed Encarnacion there's just no question he would suck the entire season. But as a Cardinal, I'll bet he puts up decent numbers.

Anyone have the numbers to crunch to show how much more the Cubs paid for their group in comparison to the Cardinals?

I'd be interested to see how much more our group is getting. Oh, and add Junior Spivey to the Cardinals list.

Difference being that the Cubs paid roughly $22 million for their players, while the Cardinals gave out just over $14 million.

By the way, I really dislike the Encarnacion signing. Realistically, though, you can't have a platoon in left, right and at 2nd...

On the other hand, Neifi-esque Aaron Miles is no comparison to Juan Pierre.

Fortunately, it looks like Miles will be playing in AAA or somewhere other than in the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

Spivey will take his spot. (Bump the STL total up to $15.5 million.)

Amen. Eckstein would have put up an ops of .600 w/ the Cubs and Carpenter would have been on the DL the past 2 years, if a Cub. 1 or 2 key injuries and the Cards could be a .500 team.

This guarantees Encanarcion an ops of at least .850.

I too have grown sick and tired of the apparent "Cardinals luck" that has seemed to happen over the past couple of years, but I have so much faith in the suckiness of Juan Encarnacion that if he gets that 850, I will personally implode the new Busch Stadium.

Agreed, but it goes to show HOW EEIRLY similar the Cubs and the Cards have gone about their offseason.

This blows, but isn't the end of the world. It's not that big a downgrade from 2005, in which the baseball player formerly known as Larry Walker played right field.

Still don't know why Jocketty didn't just resign Sanders to a one or two year deal. Even at his age he's still better than Encarnacion.
