It's like a race between Jocketty and Hendry on who can have the worst offseason. It's neck and neck right now. If Prior is traded for Tejada I think Hendry is going to win in a landslide.

It amazes me that the Cardinals didn't just work something out with Reggie Sanders. He made for a very nice role player with that team.

Jacque Jones or Juan Encarnacion? I'd rather have Jones, but not by much.

Hendry is killing the Cards by overpaying and screwing up the market.

:pukel:

So should we start taking bets on who will suck the most? My money is on Jones. Mostly because he won't have little red birds on his uniform, but also because he's really, really, really, really bad.

Jones, Encarnacion, Rondell White or Reggie Sanders?

Sanders>White>Jones>Encarnacion

I agree about Reggie.

I'm not sure who I'd "want" more. Juan is younger and was better last year but Jones has a "better" track record.

White would be on the bottom for the Cubs and Cards, because of he's injury-prone. Rondell needs to be a DH. MN is a good fit for him.

Funny part is, arguing about who is better between Juan Encarnacion and Jacque Jones is like arguing whether milk that has been sitting out in the sun all day or milk that is a month past its due date tastes better.

The Cards have a long history of turning lemons into lemonade. I'm not gonna cheer this move too loud ... I seem to remember some Cub fans applauding when the Cards signed Sanders, Carp, Eck etc (Grudz is about the only exception to that rule, underperforming his Cub numbers last year)

Watch Juan put up an .850 OPS this year

Where do you put Burnitz and P Wilson in that continuum?

Christmas has truly come early in the CardsFanInChiTown household this year.

And the best part of that is, we have the next 3 years to argue! :D

But, a study can come from these two bad signings...

The salaries and ages are basically a wash, neither will likely improve or decline a dramatic shift b/c of their age.

One player is coming off a year where he exceeded previous production (Encarnacion) and the other is coming a year where he underproduced in his final year (Jones).

Which will get the most value (or as much as possible) for these two signings?

Too bad we won't know the results for 3 freaking years. :x

I certainly was not happy about Jones, but I would have blown a couple of gaskets if we got Encarnacion. He would have been horrible as a Cub. He'll be awesome in St. Louis.

I would take Encarnacion over Jones...slightly. But geez, how pathetic are OF options this year when the Cubs and Cards need to settle for two stiffs like these?

The three year contracts for both guys are just the state of the market, that doesn't bother me so much. Both teams will throw these guys overboard in a second if/when a better option arises. If they find someone for next year, they throw Juan or Jacques overboard for the last two years to some scrub team and eat $6MM or so of the remaining contract. To the Cubs and Cards, that's chump change.

Both teams need to start having more faith in going with young OF-ers though, that's one message from this mess. There are a lot of nearly-ready and about-to-hit OF-ers around the bigs, I'd be impressed if a team like St Louis or the Cubs traded for one of them, let them start 135 games their rookie season, and see what happens.

Cripes, with St Louis in particular, it's not like they couldn't absorb the offensive growing pains of a young pup like that. Pujols, Edmonds and Rolen cover up for a lot of mistakes elsewhere.

You know Walt, if you're going to get an outfielder and hope they get hit with the magic BABIP stick, you may want to avoid the one that just put up his best BABIP season since he was in AA in 1997.

From the recent signings I don't think Jocketty even knows what BABIP is. Hendry probably thinks it's a sandwich.

Stupid GM's. :x

It's being reported on STL radio.

edit - For 3\15m

This proves in my mind that the Cardinals were after Jones for the same money (as was reported but denied by many at Cards Talk).

JJ himself, in his interview with Waddle, said the Cards were one of the teams that made him a offer.
