Why hasn't MacPhail or anyone at the Trib stepped up and slapped him silly by now? My God, is the entire group of ownership and management completely ingorant???

Edit: I think that 2nd question was way out of line considering we already know they are. No sense beating a dead horse.

Prior for Tejada?

Dec 23 - So far, no one has met the Orioles' asking price for shortstop Miguel Tejada, The Baltimore Sun reports. The most serious talks have been with the Cubs, who are offering a package that includes right-handed pitcher Mark Prior. Baltimore would prefer Carlos Zambrano because of Prior's recent history of elbow troubles.

The Cubs reportedly want left-hander Erik Bedard in the deal, but won't include top outfield prospect Felix Pie.

Cubs second baseman Todd Walker, center fielder Corey Patterson and pitcher Rich Hill have also been mentioned in a deal.

Looks like Prior is indeed on the table.

i'm still not believing that this will happen. prior will remain a cub.

When smoke starts building up around Hendry's deals, they usually catch fire. Furcal is the only one I can remember that he "lost" out on. If he wants to trade Prior, he will, and if he didn't want to trade Prior he would have told somebody by now.

Yeah right...and the next thing Hendry will do is sign Jacque Jones and Perez to a 2 year deal.

Who ever thought Prior would need to be "packaged" in a deal? How far we've fallen...

Holy crap. Prior is on the table and the Orioles are asking for more. Their stupidity could be a divine gift sent to combat Hendry's.

Rob Neyer in his chat today...

BT Chicago: Rob, What's your take on the Prior/Tejada rumors? Would you trade a starting pitcher of his potential whne he's only 24?

Rob Neyer: (11:11 AM ET ) Yes, I would. Prior's still got the potential, but he's not proved he can stay healthy. Meanwhile, Tejada's an outstanding player who's missed exactly zero games in the last five years.

That's an indication that Prior isn't nearly as "untouchable" as many here think. I like Prior, but to me Z is the only untouchable on the squad.

The only way these rumors could get worse is if the Cubs dealt Z. I would riot.

Wake up USS...it's only a dream!!!

I'm hoping it's just some sleep deprived side effect or something.

Neyer's credibility has really fallen into question with me now. :x

If this happens Hendry deserves fired, and to have all the money we have given him so far to be taken away. And then he deserves spit on.

Yea...can you believe we are breaking up the dynasty that has been the Chicago Cubs? Cant seem to recollect our record last year for the life of me.

You don't take your biggest strength and only way you have to contend and make it a question mark for a debatable upgrade offensively. It's robbing Peter to pay Paul, and it's a move that will be regretted for far longer than any of us can imagine.

You make a valid point. But this is Prior. He is part of the solution not the problem. He's young, he's cheap, he's good, and he has significant potential to be the best pitcher in baseball. You keep him.

See this is my problem with the analysis of this supposed deal. People put whatever little label they want on a player and all of a sudden it starts to make sense. You have to look at the entire package, the big picture, the whole enchilada. When you do that, you can't justify the Cubs trading Prior for Tejada. The offense gets better, the pitching gets worse, the current team stays stagnant and the future is at risk.

He had issues with the ulnar nerve in 2004. So it's more than just the line drive off his elbow -- there have been structural concerns.

Although I'm not as flippant, I agree. Hendry has to do something to shake things up. I don't know if trading Prior for Tejada is the right something, but it is something.

Regardless, this catasstrophy of an offseason following the debacle of a season is Hendry's doing.

If this trade happens, the only thing that will save him is a playoff appearence

Simply wrong. The trouble in his elbow was in a completely different area than the ulnar. An MRI was taken of his elbow and it showed that his ulnar nerve was "thick and strong"

I could see the purposed deal making the Cubs better in 06 but they are pretty much selling out 07 and 08. Sounds like a GM in a contract year to me.

I don't think that point was valid at all. He's insinuating that the Cubs lack of success is Prior's fault. There would be validity if somebody said they wanted to trade the 29 year old Lee, or the 38 year old Maddux, or 32 year old Walker. There's nothing wrong with trading off the older parts of a team that has struggled if you are making smart trades. But when you trade the 24 year old studs of the organization because things haven't worked out yet you are acting foolishly. You don't trade a 24 year old because your team hasn't won with him yet.

I can't. It's stagnation at best. You would have to follow up that deal with a major pitching acquisition. And the Cubs can't afford one. They'd still be relying on an awful OF, and might be relying on a veteran bum or completely unproven kid at 2B. The pitching staff would be littered with mediocrity.

I agree with your general sentiment, but I think it can be justified and I don't know that it necessarily makes the team worse next season.

I'm a little surprised to hear Neyer say that, but I'm kind of glad he did. If it were up to me I wouldn't make this deal. But some people are acting like this would be an enormous blunder and makes zero sense. It would be a risky deal, but there are positives and it could turn out to be a good deal in the long run.

exactly, it's like saying the twins should trade santana because he hasn't won them a world series.

we went deeper into the playoffs on the arm of prior than any of us can remember anyway.

I'm not saying it makes them worse next year. It's stagnation. They aren't good right now, after this trade they wouldn't be good. But their future would be in grave doubt after this move. You have to either greatly improve your current chances or greatly improve your future chances with any big move. And this trade greatly improves nothing. The only thing it does is put your future in doubt.
