You beat me to it. It looks like a six player deal

Foxsports.com

The Padres spent big to keep free agents Brian Giles and Trevor Hoffman. And now they're paying the price.

The Dallas Morning News is reporting that San Diego has dealt Adam Eaton, Akinori Otsuka and a minor-league prospect to the Texas Rangers in return for Chris Young, Adrian Gonzalez and Terrmel Sledge.

I think it's the opposite. You can argue that Young is better than Eaton(as well as a year younger), and Sledge+Gonzalez is worth well more than Otsuka and a prospect. Towers fleeced them here.

That might be true. But at least they're trading from a position of strength. Eaton may be overrated, but they don't really have room for Sledge.

Sucks they had to give up Young, who had a solid rookie season. Added 1 to the rotation, but subtracted a decent young arm. Still a nice trade for Texas. Eaton was looking like an ace before he got hurt at midseason. Hope he doesnt' fall victim to Arlington.

Eaton was very disgruntled with the Padres this offseason. He wanted a long term contract and didn't get it.

He was also upset to see the trade rumors.

This trade does not make the Padres better. They are definitely going to dip in the standings this year.

How doesn't it make them better? Young is better than Eaton. I don't exactly know the OF and 1B situation out there, but Gonzalez and Sledge is getting more talent in return for Otsuka and a prospect.

i'm not really impressed with either sledge or gonzalez. i don't know a lot about young but eaton's a good pitcher.

I think it's a good trade for both sides. Young isn't super talented, but he had a good year in Texas, which should be better in SD even if he pitches a little worse peripherally. Gonzalez and Sledge have the potential to put up league average production for miminum cost, though they will do so at corner IF and OF respectively.

The Padres get better starting pitching since Young is slightly better than Eaton. I'd expect Young's numbers to really improve in a switch from a hitter friendly park like Arlington to a pitcher friendly park like Petco.

Otsuka will be a tough loss for them since he does a great job on holds. But, Gonzalez is from San Diego and projects to have a bright future. I'd expect Gonzalez to start right away.

I saw Sledge play with the Nationals last year and he reminded me of CPatt with less raw talent. They probably aren't expecting much from him.

At the end of the day, I think the Padres improve from last year.

Neither Sledge or Gonzalez are world beaters, but getting both for a middle reliever, especially one who put up a 1.46 WHIP at age 33 last year is a good deal.

Young is better than Eaton. He's a year younger, further away from free agency(and therefore cheaper), he K's more guys, he walks fewer, he's harder to hit, he's harder to hit for power, and his arm doesn't have as many innings logged as eaton since he used to play basketball.

The Padres are hurting badly in the pitching department. They have Peavy and basically nothing else. They traded Lawrence and Eaton, and now have Woody Williams, Chan Ho Park as sure bets to be in the rotation. Add Chris Young, Dewon Brazelton and Tim Stauffer as questionable arms after that group. They might still have a shot at bringing Pedro Astacio back, but I haven't been paying much attention to what they are doing with that.

Klesko is moving to 1b. Gonzalez is blocked there. The Padres outfield consists of Giles, Cameron and Dave Roberts in LF. Yes, ugh regarding Roberts in LF, but he's their only lead off hitter. They traded Mark Loretta, so they don't have a decent #2 hitter anymore, either.

Roberts, Greene?, Giles, Cameron, Klesko, Castilla, Barfield?, Olivo

Oh, and the bullpen. They let Otsuka go in that trade, Seanez is gone and so is Tim Hammond. After Linebrink and Hoffman, it gets real thin.

Sledge and Gonzalez probably won't play much.

By the way, the Padres seemed like they were pretty high on Ben Johnson in the outfield, but Sledge likely bounces him back to the minors.

The Red Sox are high on Gonzalez. I could see a Wells for Gonzalez trade going down now that the Padres have A. Gonz.

Otsuka wasn't stellar last year, and he'll be 34 next year. Sledge and Gonzalez is a great return for him and a prospect.

Also, how many teams have great options after their setup men and closers? And how many of those options are just relievers happening to have good years that you cannot rely on?

The Padres are a 3rd place team next year at best with the moves they've made this offseason. My opinion of course, but I follow them pretty closely since I live here.

The Giants and Dodgers will fly right on by them.

Chris Young is an extreme flyball pitcher. I think he's the perfect acquisition for the Padres, what with their massive ballpark plus Cameron and Roberts out there defensively. If the balls stop flying out, and the flyballs don't drop, Young's strong strikeout and walk ratios are going to make him a very effective pitcher. Extremely tall, good stuff, decent control, I like his chances in San Diego quite a bit.

ESPNews just said that Millwood is visiting Texas soon. That would be a nice pickup for them as well.

If Texas signs Millwood they COULD have a very solid top of the rotation with Millwood/Eaton/Padilla with Dominguez, Wilson, Benoit competing for the final two spots (with Diamond/Danks coming up fast), the Rangers could finally stumble into some good pitching.

Or Millwood could be the next Chan Ho Park, complete down to the agent.

Maybe they can sign Millwood, then facilite a 3-way deal by sending Eaton and Blalock to Philly, with David Bell, Gavin Floyd, Jerome Williams, Walker, and Pie going to Texas, and Abreu to the Cubs.
