Before I'd waste any $$ on Jones, I'd put Corey out in RF and tell him he has a full time job. Save the $, find out what some of our young players like Murton, Cedeno, Hill etc... can do over a full season, play the best you can as a team in 2006 and hope for enough breaks to keep us competitive - then go into next year's offseason with $ as well as a wish list, FILL IT and go for broke in 2007!!!!!!

I'm not about to give up on 2006, but the last thing I want to do is tie up useful $$ in a waste of space like Jones for some stupid 3 year contract or something!!!!

If Hendry does this, my support for his decisions and knowledge of what this ballclub is lacking offensively will be over.

At this point a youth movement would probably be best, but then you have to figure with Dusty that's never going to happen. Hopefully Ronny and Matt don't go on a prolonged slump, otherwise they may get nailed to the bench.

If Jacque Jones does indeed sign I cringe to think about how bad the offense is going to be in 2006. It's going to be 2005 all over again, but this time without an MVP calibur season from Derrek Lee.

It's sad to think about, but at this point I'm ready to pack it in for the 2006 season. Hopefully the Cubs can get a competent GM and manager for 2007, but that would be too logical.

I'm sure a lot of Cub fans were thinking this at the end of last year...., "I could see the Cubs winning the Series if they can somehow sign Eyre, Howry, Jacque Jones and trade for Pierre".

I thought once the "Sammy money" was off the books, the Cubs would be major players this offseason?

Tribco is going to pocket a LOT of money this offseason.

Same old, same old.

I just read where Reggie Sanders may not become a Dodger afterall. I guess it goes to show how much I hate the idea of Jones being our RF for the next 3 years when I say I'd grab Sanders in a heartbeat at this point!!

I take that back - I don't want Sanders either, I'm just thoroughly disgusted with our options!!

I would take Reggie Sanders and run away laughing. He's a decent corner OF.

Unfortunatly, Hendry probably found some obscure "he has the highest SLG% of guys that hit under .250 during day games in August and September" to justify thinking that Jones is worth more than a ham sandwich. He's awful, and if we sign him, he'll be awful between our best hitters, neutering the lineup every day.

Now that you say that maybe Jones is the right guy. :D

The good news is that the Cubs offer is for less money and fewer years than the Royals offer.

Yeah but what if Jones would like to win 80 games in Chicago instead of winning 68 in KC? I'm sure he'd like to play for a winner.

Jim to Jacque: "Every kid dreams of playing for an 80 game winner in the big leagues. Let me make that dream happen for you, Jacque."

Any chance Jones can actually be a better hitter in Wrigley than he was in Minn.? Is Minn. a hitters or pitchers park?

There's a chance of anything I suppose, but I have a strong suspicion that a guy who swings for the fence in every AB who strikes out as much as Jones does will only swing that much harder and wilder when he "thinks" Wrigley will produce 50 HR's for him.

Doesn't matter what ballpark he's in - when he swings and misses, the only place the ball ends up is the catcher's glove.

Why would Hendry even be thinking about J. Freaking Jones?!?!? I really can't figure out what Hendry is thinking. He's not acting like his job is on the line. Nor does he seem to be thinking long-term. I just don't get it.

Now that the two of the three premium free agents are gone there are only a two responsible tracks left:

1) Make the big trade for a player that puts you in contention (e.g. Abreu or Tejada). This option is obviously dependent on the willingness of the other side (and may not be feasible no matter what you offer); or

2) Sit tight. Keep your pitching prospects (Hill, Guzman, & Williams) and see what happens. If Wood & Prior turn up healthy, Patterson rebounds to some degree and Cendeno & Murton put up decent numbers (i.e., you catch lighting), then make the deadline deal that puts you over the top. If the team nosedives you sell at the deadline and start setting up for a better crop of FA next year. As this team is currently constructed, the only way they contend is with a 2003-type season from the pitching staff.

If Hendry MUST find a body for RF - sign Wilson for one year. He'd likely have to overpay, but at least he wouldn't be compounding the problem with a two or three year deal. Platoon Patterson (LF and RF) and see if he responds. If he doesn't and Pie is putting it together you bring him up and cut Corey loose.

These deals tossed around for lesser players (Floyd, Huff, Mench, et. al.) don't make this team a contender and they'll only stand in the way of finding out what you have in the young players (Cedeno, Murton & Pie).

Jim Hendry is the world's biggest idiot if he signs Jock Strap Jones - he has no place on our team.....I'd rather see Hairston or Patterson out in RF than Jones. And why would you not bring Burnitz back and then go sign Jones?

Eyre, Howry, Pierre, and Jock Strap is the most pathetic offseason I could have ever dreamed of......

0h yeah, let's not forget about the crazy $ thrown at Neifi and Glendon either.....

Here's the scouting report on Jones:

"Jones has tremendous bat speed that can drive a fastball a long way. In late 2003 and last spring, he looked like he was increasing his patience and selectivity at the plate, but often looked overeager during the summer. When he slumps, Jones tends to swing at virtually anything near the dish early in the count. He will get himself in a hole and his at-bats will last a matter of seconds. As his salary increases, he will need to improve in these areas to remain an everyday player for a good team. Greater patience would generate a better on-base percentage, as well as better power numbers, because he'd be swinging at better pitches to hit"

Doesn't that sound like somebody we already have and are trying to get rid of? And the player we already have is considerably younger than Jones with more upside..... So, please tell me, WHY WHY WHY?

And furthermore, why bring a player with that kinda scouting report to Dusty to encourage free swinging and the neglect of patience at the plate?

He's perfect for Hendry and Dusty.

I'm not a proponent of the Cubs signing J.Jones. However, if he reverts back to his 02 & 03 numbers, it might not be that bad. 02- 300/341/511 & 03- 304/333/464. He is a GG caliber OF.

A two year deal would be OK, if other avenues of the trade market have been explored & since no one but JH & his staff really knows what the trade maket bears, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. A 3 yr. deal or more for Jones would make me question the move even more.

BTW, going into the 06' season, Jones is a far better overall baseball player than Patterson.

If I had a choice, which is pure speculation to begin with, not knowing all the details, I would rather see P.Wilson platoon in RF with CPatt.

Let's face it, the FA agent market is very thin, therefore creating a high cost for almost anyone on the trade front.

if jones can combine his IsoD from last year with his BA from 2003, he'd be a very nice surprise, and a great FA pickup. his OBP would be around .375, which would be great, but i'm not holding my breath.

But after 2 years of decline, what leads you to believe that Jones can rebound (if that's even what you're saying)? One down year would be one thing, but two in a row is a lot more troubling.

Sadly, I'd probably prefer Patterson to Wilson or Jones when you consider price, age and potential. That's not to say that Patterson is good, that's just how bad I think Jones and/or Wilson will be.

If the Cubs sign Jones, Dusty needs to be fitted with an electroshock device that will activate any time he tries to write Jones' name in the lineup against a LHP.

my thoughts exactly.....If we're stuck with either Jones or Wilson - which essentially means we're writing off the '06 season, Id rather send Patterson to the OF every day. Not to mention that we're writing off the season, and we only spent a small portion of our offseason money!!
