I'm not a proponent of the Cubs signing J.Jones. However, if he reverts back to his 02 & 03 numbers, it might not be that bad. 02- 300/341/511 & 03- 304/333/464. He is a GG caliber OF.

A two year deal would be OK, if other avenues of the trade market have been explored & since no one but JH & his staff really knows what the trade maket bears, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. A 3 yr. deal or more for Jones would make me question the move even more.

BTW, going into the 06' season, Jones is a far better overall baseball player than Patterson.

If I had a choice, which is pure speculation to begin with, not knowing all the details, I would rather see P.Wilson platoon in RF with CPatt.

Let's face it, the FA agent market is very thin, therefore creating a high cost for almost anyone on the trade front.

Jones for 1 year is somewhat bearable....for any more years then that would not be a smart move in any situation IMO.

It is Non-Tender Day so let's see if Mr. Hendry can come up with something better....I hope.

justify thinking that Jones is worth more than a ham sandwich.

That blows my mind too. If anything, JH knows the value of a ham sandwich. I mean look at him!

The Cubs are still hoping to get definitive word from the Orioles on whether they’re willing to trade talented but disgruntled shortstop Miguel Tejada, who may want a “change of scenery.”

Maybe I'm overly optimistic or maybe I'm just foolish, but maybe Jim in his heart of hearts knows something about Miggy wearing Cubbie blue next year. Please let that be the only reason JJ is being considered.

Hendry is a buffoon if the outfield he hands to dusty is Patterson, Murton, Jones, Pierre, Murton, and Mabry.

I GUARANTEE you that Mabry starts 50 games in the OF, and I GUARANTEE that we'll again be the worst or second worst offensive OF in the division.

In the division? No in the entire MLB.

Does that Red headed kid have a brother?

Is he any good?

i'm convinced that hendry never had a plan.

it sucks when you watch a team struggle with a problem most of the year, but feel confident that the problem will be remedied in the offseason with a ton of cash coming off the books and a great left-handed hitting right field OBP-machine hitting the market, and then nothing happens. i mean, literally nothing.

nearly no news at all all offseason except for a slappy CFer, two overpaid relievers and a 4th OF when we only have like 2.

So let's see now. All we did on offense is get rid of Nomar and add a leadoff hitter? How exactly are we an improved offense? Hendry is a joke.

How many games did Aramis and Nomar actually play together? By the time Nomar was healthy enough to play, Aramis had gone down for the season. So as long as Aramis stays healthy then we haven't lost anything from last season as far as infield production goes. If anything Cedeno > Nefi!.

Also Murton > Todd H. + Dubois + Lawton.

2005 went wrong for alot of reasons and so far 2 of the outfield positions and the bullpen have been greatly improved.

I'm pleased so far with what Hendry has done so far, but he still has a bit more work to do.

I believe there will be a better and more experienced team on the field at the start of 2006 than there was in 2005.

I just hope Hendry is faking interest to get the Cards to bite

Considering the Cubs offseason do you really believe that?

Look at the Cards pickups so far... not exactly what I call stunning!

I can think of holes in RF (no L.Walker) LF (no R.Sanders) you have no one at 2nd, lost Matt Morris ... Burnett chose another Country...

Cubs offseason > Cards offseason

No question, our offseason has been bad to!

Look at the Astros offseason ... all they've done is lost Roger Clemens for at least until May 1st.

They had much greater offensive stuggles than the Cubs and they still haven't improved it.

So basically what we're saying here is, we're both going to get our asses handed to us by the Astros...and Brewers...hell, can't count out the Reds...shoot, the Pirates have gotten better even.

 wait a minute...

Why would Hendry even be thinking about J. Freaking Jones?!?!? I really can't figure out what Hendry is thinking. He's not acting like his job is on the line. Nor does he seem to be thinking long-term. I just don't get it.

Hate to say, but I get it. I get it because JJones is the quintessential Jim Hendry move. He's mediocre, but "looks" the part. He's a LH bat, and that matters more than whether or not he is a good bat (see Estes and Rusch for the LHP equivalent). Jones catches the ball, for what that's worth. He has hit .300 in his life, which is a stat Hendry will talk up if he signs him. And he's slugged .500 at one point. Jim will ignore, or gloss over, the fact that Jones had his peak year at 27, when most everybody has their peak year, because this team relies on 30-33 year olds bucking the trend of history and catching lightning in a bottle to have a better than expected year.

Simply stated, Jones fits the profile sent down from central casting, and this team doesn't have the guts to go for the potential oscar winner who might not fit the studio's idea of who should fill the role.

The good news is that the Cubs offer is for less money and fewer years than the Royals offer.

Yeah but what if Jones would like to win 80 games in Chicago instead of winning 68 in KC? I'm sure he'd like to play for a winner.

Someone e-mail Jones and tell him that Z and Prior are out until July. That way he'll sign with KC.

Or he'll just be greedy like rest of MLB players, sign with KC and hope for a mid-season trade to a contender.

if jones can combine his IsoD from last year with his BA from 2003, he'd be a very nice surprise, and a great FA pickup. his OBP would be around .375, which would be great, but i'm not holding my breath.

Jones' numbers are pretty interesting. Early in his career he usually hit for a pretty good average but would rarely take a walk. His patience has vastly improved over the past couple years, but that was accompanied by a similarly sharp drop in his batting average. His power and strikeout totals have more or less remained steady, so the difference can mostly be found in his BABIP. (It was around .350 when he was hitting .300, and dropped to the .280 range over the past couple years.)

If I were to guess I'd say that a BABIP in the .280 range is closer to what Jacque's skill set can support, so I wouldn't count on that .370 OBP any time soon. It's not out of the question, though.

Isn't this his last chance for a decent contract? I'd go for the cash if I were him. :D

So if the Cubs signed Jones and E.Perez would that be a good enough platoon to be productive?

It depends on what you mean by productive. If you're talking about the platoon giving above-average production for a corner OF I'd put the odds at slim to none. Jones would get the vast majority of the AB, and he's unlikely to give you anything better than a .270/.330/.440 line. He and Perez may combine to give enough production for an average-level RF, but even that's not a very good bet in my opinion.

The only real solace is that our 2006 outfield is almost a lock to be better than it was in 2005. That's not a lot of comfort, however, when you consider just how bad the OF was last year.

Ugh. We should start a collection to get Sammy back on the juice. I'm just kidding. The late '90's were some magical years. It's shocking that the third base curse got moved to right field.
