I call it in general "pop", but if I want a cola drink I'll ask for a "coke".

What constitutes something being a "cola drink"? Just curious. I say soda.

Coke, Pepsi, RC Cola, etc.

Pepsi?

People actually call all types of soda coke?! So if you want a 7-Up, you ask for a Coke? Weird!
No. They just substitute the word cola for either 'pop' or 'soda'.

Example:

Do you want me to get you a cola?

I wasn't even aware of this whole referring to all soda as "coke" phenomena. That's [expletive].

Calling it pop is just cheesy.

I f I have to choose a generic name for it then Soda for life.

Actually I don't really call it any of those. I usually just refer to whatever I'm drinking by it's name. Coke is Coke, Dr. Pepper is Dr. Pepper, and so on.

Anyone notice that STL is randomly soda?

Yeah, I grew up in STL and I say soda. Anyone who says "pop" is just flat wrong, by the way. Get with the times people.

Yeah, when I moved up here people could tell I was from out of town because I called it "soda". Pop is a noise not a friggen' soft drink.

I'm pretty sure it is referring to people calling all soft drinks "coke"

It's pop.

As Tony Reali on Around the Horn would say, listen to the lady. She has class and grace.

Anyone who calls it "coke" is a moron. Coke is a brand name. You dont say "man, i need some burger king." "oh ok, what kind of burger king do you want?" "mcdonalds, please"

Do you say, "Q-tip" instead of cotton swab or "Kleenex" instead of tissue?

If I'm not mistaken, zipper was also once just a brand name.

Big difference. A q-tip is a q-tip. It doesn't matter what brand, same with a kleenex. A coke, pepsi, sprite, dr. pepper, mountain dew, etc are all very different.

what?

Q-tip is a brand name and so is Kleenex. You can get Scott's tissues and you can get CVS brand cotton swabs.

There is no difference.
