I have a feeling Pie will be involved in any deal we make for Tejada. To give up a player of his caliber, they will want the gem of our minor league system.

Vance, I disagree. I don't believe Hendry will include him.

We can discuss whether that's a mistake, but I don't think Pie will be part of any Cubs offer.

I don't think he'd be part of the offer Jim makes, but I do think that Baltimore is going to keep countering with him.

I think a lot depends on how special a player Hendry believes Tejada can be for the Cubs. I also think that whether Pie is in the deal will greatly depend on a.) does Hendry think he can retain Pierre after 2006. b.) what other players Baltimore is insisting on.

Pie isn't even a blue chipper. We're supposed to get Tejada with a bunch of second tier prospects. sorry, but we don't have any can't miss guys (well, maybe Pawelek, but it's too early to tell).

I think the Cubs WILL HAVE TO include Pie in order to get Tejada. I just don't see them doing the deal otherwise. If I'm Hendry, I do that as long as they don't take Hill, too. One or the other, with a few other real good prospects.

You have to give up something to get something back. Tejada is a SURE THING...Pie is not....even though he probably will be good...but we thought Bobby Hill, Hee Seop Choi and Patterson were going to be real good too..................

I think Pie's value is severely diminished with the acquisition of Pierre and the intention to sign him to an extension. Pie in RF isn't anything great. Pie reaching his potential in CF would have been awesome, but he isn't irreplaceable in RF/LF.

I don't follow the Cubs minor leaguers closely, but I was never too enamored with Hill or Choi.

How does the Baltimore brass justify this kind of move WITHOUT bringing back in return the crown jewels of our system is what I am thinking.

Especially considering what we paid for Pierre.

We will have to pay dearly, IMO.

I will admit I was very enamored with Choi, not so much with Hill.

We'll see, but I stand by what I said.

If the Cubs wind up trading for Tejada, Pie won't be part of the deal.

They might not get him and we might hear that refusal to include Pie was a deal breaker, but I believe Hendry will not part with him.

Choi would be a middle class version of Adam Dunn if a team would give him 500 PAs in a season.

i like when people justify trading prospects by throwing out names of all the cub busts and how they've never amounted to anything. never mind zambrano, garland, dontrelle, and other guys that have panned out.

Off topic but this list made me wonder...Who was the last everyday player to come through the Cubs system and have a career like the guys on the list above?

Rafael Palmeiro?

Hopefully, Matt Murton. For a little while, it looked like Eric Hinske would be one...

To answer your question, I can't really think of any.

I never understood why it is that since previous prospects didn't work out for us, that future ones will not.

I don't know if anyone is saying that. The future ones MIGHT work out, but by looking at the past we can see that is far from a lock. Miggy is as close to a lock as you will find. His numbers the last 6 or 7 years are very consistent. That's why it is worth the risk, to me anyway.

Technically, Mark Grace. Raffy and Grace were both drafted in 85, but Palmeiro hit the bigs in 86, Grace not until 88.

Zambrano and Harvey for Tejada and Bedard? :D

Unfortunately, I really think it would take a Z or Prior to land Tejada. Nobody likes the idea of losing a Zambrano, but now would be the time to do it. Millwood is still available via FA, and I think Beane would still move Zito. While I have the utmost respect for Z's ability, this team needs offense and SS stability. Upper tier pitchers are available every season, one way or another. The same CANNOT be said about Tejada caliber players.

Hendry needs to get this done.

JC, First of All, GO IU!.

That said....No way I trade Zambrano for Tejada. Z has the stuff to dominate for 10+ more years, and he has already done it at the Big League level.

You're willing to give up a 24 year old ace for a 30 year old top tier SS?

24 year old upper tier SP are not available every season. i'd love to have great offensive production at SS, but it's easier to pick it up in the OF. it's a luxury, not something to sell out for.
