Since the Cubs lost out on a good fielder in Furcal...what about Renteria. He would get about same amount $10 million per year.

I know Renteria struggled last year with defense compared to before, but so did Aramis Ramirez....probably will turn it around.

We could then put Cedeno at 2b, and trade Walker.

Opinions? Thoughts?

i'll take walker, his better offensive production and reasonable contract over renteria, his inferior offensive production and long term, big $ contract.

I would rather keep Cedeno at SS and Walker at 2B to be honest. How much more does Renteria give you over Cedeno? What made Furcal such a good option was his speed and the fact that he can leadoff.

Put Cedeno at SS and keep Walker at 2B. Find someone to play CF and RF and our problems are solved. It's that simple, Jim.

A LOT of people on this board wanted Renteria last year when he was free agent.

I don't think he would be too bad and he could bat #2 or #6, from what I remember he was clutch with the Cardinals.

Go look at his numbers from the last three years. At the rate Renteria is declining, he'll post something like a .152/.189/.230 line in the final year of his contract.

I'm guessing the Red Sox really regret that contract right about now. I admit that I wanted Renteria last offseason. Albeit not for that much money, but I figured he'd be a great fit here.

Nope.

I know he was awful last year defensively but wasn't he always pretty mediocre?

Nah. Cardinal fans said he was the greatest defensive shortstop since Ozzie Smith. Of course, they were saying that BEFORE he left. Not sure what they are saying now.

He made $8 million in 2005 and produced .276/.335/.385. The year before, he was at .287/.327/.401. I have confidence that Cedeno can at least match that while playing good defense at a minimal cost.

ESPN was reporting a rumor of:

Renteria to Braves

Lugo to Sox

Marte (3rd base prospect) to Rays.

Isn't Marte one of the Braves top prospects. Do we want to part with one of ours for Lugo?
