The most interesting point in that article was this the last line:

"The Phillies also don't plan to offer centerfielder Kenny Lofton arbitration."

Posted

I suggested JWill, Hill and Roberto Novoa for Abreu over a month ago. Glad to see such a combination is at least being discussed.

Lofton not being tendered is not a surprise, Philadelphia has 5 OF-ers right now as it is. Or perhaps you have forgotten that they acquired Aaron Rowand for Jim Thome.

JWill, Hill, Novoa, fer cryin' out loud, DO IT!!

First: It takes two teams to make a trade, and I don't see Philly just jumping all over themselves for that deal, even tho with that deal, the Cubs would absorb ALL of Abreu contract.

Second: I don't understand why Philly thinks it can land a "frontline starting pitcher" for Abreu? He is 32 yrs old, he is on the side of his prime yrs that includes him declining, and to top it off...makes $30 mill (or something like that) over the next two yrs. I just don't see a team giving up a frontline starter for that. Now.....If they would bring the price down to say...Jeriome Williams, Scott Moore (they need a 3rd baseman to replace Bell/Nunez) and Renyel Pinto (or Rich Hill), I'd be glad to absorbed the rest of Abreu's contract.

In other words: Philly is stuck with Abreu, if they are stuck on the notion they can land a "frontline starter" for Abreu.

And the Phillies asked for Mark Prior in return. Rotoworld says Philadelphia was not "dismissed outright".

I want Abreu badly, but I don't make this trade.

The article goes on to suggest a possible Williams + Hill for Abreu, which I would do so fast Gillick's head would spin.

I'd trade Prior for Abreu, Micheals and the Phillies best pitching prospect.

If I'm trading Prior who's still very affordable for Abreu, the deal would be Prior for Abreu + Floyd + Michael Bourn and 10 million. (5 paid this year on Abreu, 5 paid next year). If the Phillies would do that, I might consider it.

At least the Phils are ADMITING that they are interested in trading Abreu, instead of lamely insisting that he is not available... sure....

No way the cubbies give up Prior unless they are getting alot extra in return, and I mean lots (another outfielder and a starting pitcher in return).

My guess is that Abreu, and his big contract, can and will be had for quite a bit less. I still think we would be a really good destination for him. Despite his age, he is better fit for the cubbies than for many other teams.

I would LOVE to see him hit in Wrigley, too.

Prior shouldn't be involved in any talks at all, bottom line.....they can keep Abreu and his pricey contract and we'll hang onto the top tier pitcher.

If the Cubs are trading Prior, it needs to be to the Reds for Adam Dunn and Felipe Lopez.

Abreu + Utley wouldn't do it for you? :D

I'd be astonished if the Phillies can't get a more established starter than J. Williams. I am not saying give them Prior, but I can't believe any package that starts with Williams is going to get it done. In an environment with contracts like Furcal's, BJ Ryan's (and Eyre and Howery for that matter) Abreau's almost seems like a bargin. The Cubs aren't going to be able acquire Abreau for spare parts.

If it will cost CHC Prior that pretty well blows a hole in the argument that STL could get him for Marquis, or BAL (Bedard), Yankees (Wang), etc...

I'd never do Prior for Abreu straight across. That's just plain silly. Prior is 24 and Abreu is 32. The only reason Prior's numbers haven't been stellar the last two seasons is freak injuries.

I'll take Abreu, Michaels, Bourn, and Hamels. Anything less and keep on steppin'. (basically, this would never happen)

Define established. Marquis is rumored to be in the talks, he's been around a bit, and has established the fact that he's just a mediocre pitcher, no better than Williams.

Agreed. I suspect that Gillick doesn't haveto trade Abreu but will if the right deal comes along. That said:

PLEASE make it happen Jim!!!!!!!

Pie, Nolasco, and Novoa for Abreu and cash.

Nolasco has front of the rotation stuff; Novoa could close, or at least be a solid middle of the pen guy; Pie can be spun off for more picthing.

I would never trade Prior within the division. To me, that's worse than the Pirates trading Aramis to the Cubs... I doubt that happens. Plus, with the Reds actively shopping Casey (and Kearns) it looks like they plan to move Dunn to 1B. I think they're keeping him.

My goodness, if it only takes Williams and perhaps Hill and another prospect, Hendry needs to do that now and move to another position he needs.

I'd even throw in Neifi and Jose to make that deal happen :)

I trade Williams, Hill and whatever other pitching prospect the Phillies desired for Abreu. Holding on to that can't miss or top prospect (Hill) has worked real well for the Cubs the last 97 years hasn't Hendry?

Hey, can't blame the Phillies for trying.

I agree but other teams have to realize that the Phillies aren't coming from a position of strength. They have a hot commodity but it's hardly a new shiny toy (its more like an aged wine). They have a crowded outfield and they are shopping a still productive, yet aging, star with a big contract. No contending team is going to give them their number one or two pitcher (particularly not a young one). If the Phillies are serious about trimming their payroll and getting some young and inexpensive talent they will get flexible with their demands. If they are willing to deal with Williams, Hill, and some other lesser prospects then bring it on but I disagree with depleting the staff for a guy who's past his prime.
