Says the deal will be finalized later today

DALLAS -- A.J. Burnett moved closer to agreeing to a five-year, $55 million free-agent contract with the Toronto Blue Jays as his agents and the team worked into Tuesday morning to wrap up final details.

After courting A.J. Burnett for a month, the Blue Jays are about to land their man.

The sides anticipate the deal being finalized later today.

I just think it is crazy that if they sign him they would have put $102 million into just two pitchers. Ouch! What about the offense?

Don't forget they combine for 2 GREAT yrs, and 4 decent yrs in a combine 14 yrs of ML service. Not a great investment for a team that still needs to be on a limited budget.

They'd be great or they'd be awful next. There will be no mediocrity for the Blue Jays in 06.

All reports are this one is just waiting for the ink to dry. Toronto scores two big name FA's. So, for it hasn't been a bad offseason for the Jays.

I think the Jays are going to get an impact hitter next.

Some depressing news here from the fallout of this...

With Burnett going north, the Cardinals are unlikely to pursue the top remaining free agent starters, Kevin Millwood or Jared Washburn, according to club sources. Rookie Anthony Reyes would become the front-runner for the fifth spot in the rotation, with Marquis likely to return as No. 4 behind Chris Carpenter, Mulder and Jeff Suppan.

Jocketty met Monday afternoon with representatives for free agent outfielder Jacque Jones but did not tender an offer. The club's interest may increase given an unproductive outcome with Burnett.

Jocketty also confirmed the club's interest in St. Louis native Bill Mueller as a possible successor to Mark Grudzielanek at second base. Mueller, the 2004 American League batting champion, has played little second base but, according to Jocketty, has been endorsed by scouts as a possibility there. Mueller, like Jones, has previously expressed a desire to play in St. Louis.

CFIC, whats depressing about this? However Mueller would be a good pickup for the Cards. Im not to sure how well he would do defensively at 2nd, but offensivly he would fit in nice.

seriously? you know if jones and mueller go to StL then Jones will hit 320 with a 400 obp and mueller will compete for the nl batting title while being the best defensive 2b ever

Just for that...

Z + Boras + FA = Freaky Big Contract To The Yankees

Z loves hitting too much to go to the Yankees.

....It'll be the Mets.

I'm mixed on this one. Burnett would have made for a great 1-5 staff next year. But at 5yr/55, that's too long and too much money. 4yr/45 was a major push for a .500 pitcher. I hope we look back on this in 3 years and compare him to Hampton and Kevin Brown.

As far a where the Cards go next, I think they'll try and resign Matt Morris to a 3 year deal and then trade Marquis to the Reds for Kearns or Pena. Maybe take a look at J Jones for the third OF spot and either Mueller, Lugo or Nomar for second. They still have a couple bullpen spots to shake out. Looking like a long list all of a sudden.

But that's well after the Cubs traded him to the Vegas Marlins for Miguel Cabrera. :pig:

OK, here's the only optimistic view I can shed on the situation, as a Cards fan:

I'm glad Jocketty didn't budge. He did everything but guarantee a fifth year. He basically said, "Hey, if you don't blow out your arm, your fifth year option will kick in." He didn't cave.

We supposedly offered 4/$48...$60 after a 5th year option. However, what we didn't do all along was guarantee that fifth year... I'm glad they didn't panic!

It sucks losing out on Burnett, but at least they pursued him with their heads on straight; they didn't let the hype get the best of 'em.

Someone just claimed to have seen Burnett again at the airport. In fact, I saw him too. He drove to my house in a taxi, personally kicked me in the balls and said, "Deja Vu, [female dog]."

On the bright side, while we lost out on Renteria... he was a bust! I want Burnett to be super successful but then get hurt, just so it wises us Cards fans up a lil.
