OK, here's the only optimistic view I can shed on the situation, as a Cards fan:

I'm glad Jocketty didn't budge. He did everything but guarantee a fifth year. He basically said, "Hey, if you don't blow out your arm, your fifth year option will kick in." He didn't cave.

We supposedly offered 4/$48...$60 after a 5th year option. However, what we didn't do all along was guarantee that fifth year... I'm glad they didn't panic!

It sucks losing out on Burnett, but at least they pursued him with their heads on straight; they didn't let the hype get the best of 'em.

Someone just claimed to have seen Burnett again at the airport. In fact, I saw him too. He drove to my house in a taxi, personally kicked me in the balls and said, "Deja Vu, bitch."

On the bright side, while we lost out on Renteria... he was a bust! I want Burnett to be super successful but then get hurt, just so it wises us Cards fans up a lil.

Somewhere inside this post lies the funniest thing I have ever seen on NSBB. However, I will not bold it since I'm pretty sure you aren't allowed to say it.

If you would have Burnett gets 5 years going in to the offseason I would have called you crazy.

I would've called you crazy if you didn't think Burnett was getting 5 years in this market.

Considering Chan Ho Park was the last pitcher to get a 5 year deal and Burnett's injury history I didn't think it was crazy. It's not like a lot of teams were throwing 5 yr deals at him - I believe the Blue Jays were the only one.

I found this blurb from Rotoworld quite entertaining.

A.J. Burnett - S - Blue Jays

Blue Jays signed RHP A.J. Burnett, who had been with the Marlins, to a five-year, $55 million contract.

ESPN is reporting that Burnett has an opt out after three years. Burnett will earn $7 million next year and $12 million in each of the following four, so he'd make $31 million before he could opt out. Since no one else is saying it, we will: this is a very good signing for the Blue Jays. Burnett is risky, but he's the one pitcher out there capable of being a dominant force for the next several years. If you're going to take a chance, it's much better to spend $11 million per year on Burnett than $7 million-$8 million on Paul Byrd or Matt Morris. And, frankly, everyone on TV and the papers expressing shock and disbelief at this deal just hasn't been paying attention. This doesn't raise the market for everyone else. Every team in MLB knew that Burnett could and likely would get this type of contract as a free agent. Deal with it. The money is out there, and it's going to get spent. Dec. 6 - 5:22 pm et
