Burnett is more of a gamer than Wood.

Yup. In addition, I bet if his mechanics were not right, he wouldn't be such a jerk and refuse to change them.

No one will hear from JeffH for the rest of the thread.

I'm here.

Burnett throws a little bit harder than Wood now. Burnett has a much better anti-HR profile and is an much more extreme ground ball pitcher. Burnett has similar breaking stuff to Wood. Burnett has a plus changeup; Wood doesn't.

too bad he hasn't been able to use all those awesome pitches to put up #'s better than wood.

Even in 2004 and 2005 Wood's K/9 and BAA were much better than Burnett's. I think we can put a fork in this argument.

Burnett is more of a gamer than Wood.

I will never forget the game in 2003 against the Marlins during the regular season when Wood I think was in the 8th or 9th inning trying to finish off the game and he was so worn out huffing and puffing clearly out of juice and got the K. I had a lot more respect for Wood after that game.

Also Burnett's been kicked out of his own clubhouse more than Wood has.

I forget where I read this, but Bill James created a system to compare how dominating a pitcher was. Wood's 20K, 1 hitter was the most dominating performance by a pitcher in history.

Burnett throws harder? Farnsworth throws harder than Wood.

Burnett is more of a groundball pitcher? That doesn't have anything to do with quality of stuff. It's a pitching repertoire that tend to get those results. Wood isn't a groundball pitcher. I suppose Prior's stuff isn't so hot b/c he isn't an extreme groundball pitcher. Lowe's a groundball pitcher and his stuff isn't great.

Burnett has a plus changeup? Where'd you hear that? I'd call it average, maybe even slightly above average.

I'd say Burnett throws the two-seamer slightly better, but Wood's slider is much better than Burnett's. Both have solid curveballs and plus four-seamers.

Regardless of how Burnett performed before or how healthy he was before, he will win 4 Cy Youngs and have at least two 25-win seasons as a Cardinal.

Can someone PM Joe Buck to get his confirmation on this?

He's already said it's a done deal. I got his IM off his official website. He said he'll come on later if he has time to confirm.

From Rotoworld:

Team sources told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the Cardinals won't guarantee A.J. Burnett a fifth year, something they'd likely need to do in order to sign him.

Four years and $40 million isn't going to be enough. Sure Burnett's a gamble, but he should get a five-year, $60 million contract in a market that values Rafael Furcal at $13 million per year and Esteban Loaiza and Paul Byrd at $7 million. Dec. 5 - 3:14 am et

It's from 3:15 AM on Monday morning... erm... apprently we didn't sign him?

Duncan is good, Leo is better, but Bud Black is the GAME'S BEST PITCHING COACH, period. And he doesn't have the quality of pitchers the Braves had, or the Cards have.

Burnett has great stuff, but....he's stuff is not as good as Wood. Beisdes. Burnett has already had 2 TJS in his career, so that has to be considered a HUGE gamble for the Cardinals. People wants to fall in love with the fact that Burnett had a 9 walk no hitter, and a few glimpse of brillance, but the fact remains....the Cubs are frustrated with the lack of consistancy shown by Wood, but by comparasion, Burnett makes Wood look like Maddux. I wouldn't touch Burnett even if he can cheaply. And the stats prove Wood is better.

But, I'm 95% sure he was at the airport while I was picking up my brother. It happened so fast...but I am sure it was him!

XM Radio's MLB Home Plate is reporting that Burnett and his agent were in Washington yesterday to discuss the Nationals interest and apparently they are very interested.

This is a Cub board so banter is inevitably going to come about, but, in my defense... I wouldn't have mentioned the airport thing at all if it weren't for that Scout.com article that popped up.

You can't tell me you wouldn't have taken a sighting more seriously -- eve nif just a little; I know that alone or with the article it still means almost nothing -- if an article that said he was on the verge of signing broke out less than an hour later.

And here's an update from a Toronto newspaper... think it came out around 12:30 today:

It still wasn't looking good for the Jays, despite their offer reportedly being longer than and superior to the four-year package of roughly $40 million (all figures U.S.) proposed by the Cards. The word is that Burnett is so gung-ho about playing in St. Louis that all it would take is for the Cards to guarantee a fifth year — or even an easily-vesting option for a fifth.

Isn't it at all possible that was Burnett you saw in the airport, and that he was in St. Louis to see the new stadium and meet with Jocketty and whatnot? Maybe Walt's schedule was too busy to go court him that they flew him to StL to talk to him.

Yes, entirely.

PS: I didn't claim to see Burnett. Someone else did on STLToday. And he wasn't a 1-post n00b, either.

Edit:

PSS: And no, just because someone has a lot of posts does not mean that they can not lie. I understand everyone can. Thank you.

Pieonmyhands, I don't think anyone is attacking you cause this turned out to be (maybe) wrong. Don't worry about it.

OK. I'm just kind of paranoid with wthat's-his-face lurking around here with the Furcal/Zito crap; add that to the fact that I'm a Cards fan, and I know I'm probably a "suspect."

Being a Cards fan doesn't open you up to any suspicion on this board, just a whole lot of unfunny cheap shots at your team for being lucky with crap players.

Gammons reporting AJ to the Blue Jays for 5/55

It's now officially turned into a bidding war, and I think at this point we are done.

I really thought we had him.
