good thing hendry signed rusch to a two year deal.

It's important to have at least 20 pitchers on the 25 man roster...

Too little, too late. STL either includes a 5th year or he ends up with the Blue Jays is my guess.

1. I'll be VERY surprised if the Cards add another year. This is the first time they have offered a four year contract to a pitcher. Apparently it was a stretch for them to do so. So to add a 5th is asking too much.

2. Why is it too late? The Dodgers entered the Furcal race at the last second and landed him. He's not signed yet, so I wouldn't say it's too late. I also suspect that Hendry has been in touch with Burnett's agent a few times this offseason already.

Also, with all the mediocre pitchers (aka Clement) getting 9 mil, 10 mil on Burnett could end up being a very good contract.

Rumors have him making his decision tomorrow, if the timeframe of the Cubs entering the sweepstakes was less than 24 hours ago, I can't see them having a serious say in the matter.

Injured: Mark Prior

Why do people consistently say Prior is injury prone? It's absolute garbage.

I agree.....every columnist always makes some remark about Prior and injuries - its bogus!!

Signing Burnett isn't the worst option in the world. The Cubs have money to spend, over 20 million by most accounts. Unless the Cubs think they can take on Abreu at 13 million or plan to spend 10 of that on Soriano, they could sign Burnett to 10-11 million and still have the money to acquire Bradley, Wilkerson, Pierre, etc.

If the Cubs signed Burnett, it takes some of the pressure off Wood.

If Wood is healthy, the Cubs end up with a rotation of Prior, Zambrano, Wood, Burnett, and Maddux. All of those with the exception of Maddux are capable of being a staff ace. Teams would not want to come in and face the Cubs. Even if one of the top four succumbed(sp?) injury, the Cubs would have a fearsome top three. Signing Burnett would also still give the Cubs a big three if Wood is let go next season.

Of the big three of Giles, Furcal, and Burnett, Burnett was the last on my list. But I'd rather the Cubs give 11 million to Burnett than throw 6 million at Jaque Jones or Juan Encarnacion.

I agree completely Vance. I'm far from disturbed at this Burnett news.

I dont think thats true. The Cards offered Mike Hampton a 7 yr 91 million contract I believe the year he was a free agent. I could be wrong but I dont think I am.

to me, it seems like money talks. there is no real deadline for burnett to make his decision as far as we know. even if his agent is getting ready to call the cards and say yes, if jim calls with a comparable/better offer he's going to give aj the chance to consider it. we might as well make aj the best offer we can, maybe he'd like to work alongside maddux, prior, and zambrano for a year.

Maybe Hendry is driving up the price to get St. Louis to spend more, which would then prevent the Cards from getting Hendry's prized possession: Jacque Jones.

That's gonna replace the whale in my nightmares.

I don't even know what you're referring to (if anything), but that made me laugh out loud.

Gah. You copied what I wrote, then added something very horrible about Jacque Jones.

Just saw that on page 2.

Put it this way: the only problem I have with your post is the Jacque Jones bit.
