someone please hurry up and debunk this ridiculous story...

or confirm it

without the 2 hundred mil contracts

as has been said no way is that part of this story true

The "article" (and I use that term loosly) is from a message borad like this one. I question its veracity.

If it is true Hendry should be immediatly terminated and whomever lets him make that deal should go too.

I am just trying to get my arms around this deal. Does this mean no Juan Pierre?

Here's the prospective outcome:

Pierre

Furcal

Lee

ARam

Soriano

Murton

Mench

Barrett

:?: Is this any good? You can move Alfonso down in the order; if he's hitting in the six hole, he's probably the best no. six hitter in baseball.

So Hendry is going to offer Furcal double the amount everyone else is offering? There is no way Furcal is worth a 6/100 deal.

ITI seems like too much of a reliable source to not believe.

Based on what? Right, because who could forget their breaking news story reporting that we acquired Pudge after '03 in that 3-year deal.

It's message board people, just like this one. There's absolutely no way they're giving Furcal 6/100 when every leak in the papers has said they're looking at a deal in the 4/38 range.

I doubt the figures big time. However the founder of this site has just retired and has been replaced by the guy that wrote this story. Again people pay to be members of this site, it is not in his interest to print BS stories. BTW this was not on the message board it was an article on the front page. Not that i'm trying to give this story legs but......

Still, the story has some major problems.

1) How does trading for Soriano help the team's defense? I thought Hendry's main reason for shopping Walker was to get somebody at 2B who could "catch the ball."

2) Why would the Cubs pay Furcal $16M, turn around and trade for Soriano and pay him $16M all the time knowing that D.Lee is looking for a contract extension. Can you imagine the figures D.Lee is going to ask for if those two guys get $16M?!?!? I believe that ARAM also has an out in his contract at the end of the year. At this rate the Cubs could have a $75M infield.

If it was on that BS mlbtraderumors site, I'd wouldn't buy it.

ITI is cubs.com part deux

More like the news section of cubs.com or the message board?

The article doesn't make much sense. $100 million? That's insane. Also, it looks like ITI is doing a free preview weekend trying to get more people to buy their membership by giving out juicy information that can only be found on their site (don't see Furcal almost a Cub on any other site). ITI is usually pretty good about their information, but this one leaves me puzzled.

...The source told ITI that the deal could pay Furcal as much as $100 million including the sixth year...

Riiiiiight. Geez, what happened to only posting credible information?

EDIT: LOL, and after skimming through the thread, I see that some people are worried that it might be true. To those people - I wrote the word gullible on your ceiling, have a look.

Wow. That cannot be true. For the sake of my sanity. As have been mentioned on this board, the bad things about that article:

1. Doubling any offer Furcal has even been realistically seeking.

2. Trading 5 players for 2 minor upgrades (Soriano over Walker, Mench over Burnitz)

3. Giving Soriano a long-term deal

4. Trading a starting pitcher

5. Blowing all your budget and still having a hole in CF and SP.

6. Blowing all your budget on long term deals with Lee, Prior, and Zambrano nearing bigger paydays.

7. Jim Hendry giving out 2 6-year deals in a week, when he hasn't offered more than 4 to anyone in his GM career.

Jim Hendry would be ripped to shreds if this article came true, and rightfully so.

So, this would all but cement DLee's departure after this year. If we've given 2 players $100 million contracts, he's gone because we couldn't afford him.

This deal has a snowball's chance.

Hard to disagree. He would have to get Pierre and then hope that the 06' Cubs become the 03' Marlins.

But lets not jump the gun...

I can see these deals happening to a lesser extent. Perhaps 100 mil was for Furcal and Soriano combined or something. For the trade, I seriously doubt cedeno being a part of it but it might make sense. That solidifies the top two spots in our order. Plus, overall, it might save us prospects as soriano looks like the alternative to pierre who would command at least one of our best pitchers. I take Pinto, Soriano, and mench over Pierre, Aardsma, and 2 other prospects

Smells like BS to me. Incentives can't be based on on-field performance, so I don't think there is a stolen base incentive in there.
You can't base incentives on on-field numbers (except PAs and IPs), but you can base them on things like winning MVP, batting title, etc.

This rumor is real, people. Scout.com is a respectable site and has been around for a while. Obviously no one KNOWS if it will go down, but it's at least real.

Wow! A real rumor?! Wow... just wow.

I've never heard of such of thing!

No way. No way Hendry would decide that Furcal is worth more than Aramis and Lee combined, unless the budget is $200m.

Maybe it was a typo, and it was supposed to say $10m per year, and not $100m. And if this comes true (which I completely doubt), Hendry will get torn to pieces around here, even by the more optimistic posters. That would be just a colossal waste of $16.6m/yr.
