Well, that is a legitimate concern, but Mabry can still get 3 (or so) starts a week between LF, RF, 3B and 1B without really taking away any significant playing time from anybody.

Yes, but we know that wouldn't be likely.

Instead, he'd get 5 or 6 starts a week in place of the little redheaded boy.

With a 1 million dollar base salary, I think any incentives in the contract would be insignificant in the larger picture of the budget. I would think even if there are incentives, the total package would probably only top out at 1.5 million.

I don't think anyone cares about the extra 500k. They worry about giving Baker the appearence of a platoon partner for Murton.

Murton can't be trusted. A veteran who played himself onto the bench can.

The point is that, whatever the incentive money is, it's meaningful to Mabry. I'd fear that RumDum would play him too much in LF in an effort to get him that dough.

Could it be an unfounded fear? Of course, but who knows?

If RumDum got him the extra money by playing him periodically in place of Lee, Ramirez, Kearns, AND Murton, I guess that'd be OK.

I'd rather just give him some extra guaranteed money, though, and be done with it.

Great bench player. Left handed pop. $1m price tag? Sounds good, as long as he's signed to be a bench player, and Hendry doesn't tell him what he told Hollandsworth last winter (yes, I'm afraid of LH corner OF veterans).

COuldn't Adam Dunn fit that description?

What's funny is Holla has better numbers last season and better career numbers.

So, you know, if we didn't have a mildly [expletive] garden gnome for a manager, Holla is probably the better bench choice

(obviously this is in jest, Mabry can cover a whole lot more positions than Holla)

I'm not sure about the jest. I don't view the multipe position thing as that much of a positive, because you'd never want him starting at any of your positions, unless he somehow repeats his fluke 2004 numbers. Outside of 2004 he's been a pretty bad hitter, with his decent career OBP mostly propped up by good seasons in his mid 20s. Since the age of 28 he's had bad seasons more often than good seasons.

7 starters, 8 in the pen, full bench. You'd think this team would want to get some everyday players eventually.

Maybe that's why Hendry wants guys that can catch the ball, there are only five guys out there.

I'm laughing on the outsdie but crying on the inside.

Hendry says it is going to be via the trade route. I hope he has a blockbuster brewing on the back burner b/c the hot stove, she aint so hot.

My personal preference is Sweeney, but whatever. Does it bother anyone that Mabry had a sub-300 OBP in nearly 250 AB's last year?

No. He fits right in.

Huh? When did we get Kearns? That's news to me.

"Kearns" is code for "any of the unfortunately right handed hitting right fielders we might get who would benefit from a guy like Mabry facing the really, really tough right handed pitchers".

This group includes Austin Kearns, Kevin Mench, and Craig Monroe.

You mean getting this guy means we can get Macias on the first greyhound to Iowa???

GIVE HIM WHAT IT TAKES

Nah, just show him to a cab stand.

We can't replace Macias with a white guy. Mabry will never make it through all the day games at wrigley.

He's nothing special, if what makes him appealing to fans is that it removes Macias from the roster or his ability to play several positions moreso than his production, then I wonder how productive was he?

Like CP mentioned Sweeney would look great in this role, might've cost more, but would've brought more production.

I looked up Mabry's numbers and he must have had an off year last year, but overall he is not much better than Macias's, which is really saying something.
