2 relevant points on Alex Gonzalez and Juan Pierre in today's Sun Sentinel:

(1) "Both the Cubs and Braves are believed to have pinpointed Gonzalez as Plan B assuming they don't land free agent Rafael Furcal."

(2) "The Cubs have inquired about Marlins center fielder Juan Pierre, but a source familiar with those talks said the teams were "not very far down the road" on a possible deal."

I have felt the last 2 days that the Pierre to the Cubs deal had lost momentum. This article suggests that talks were in the early stages at best, and certainly not the closing stages as the ESPN radio reports indicated on Sunday and Monday.

Yeah, just what we need. AGon II. Get him and World Series, here we come!!

Why Nomar can't be "plan B", with Cedeno as "plan C" is beyond me.

At least it shows Neifi starting is not plan 'B'.

If all the rumors are even remotly true, IMO Hendry is negotiating himself right out of a job.

Neifi gets too much for too long. Meanwhile Hendry is persuing his clone in Florida.

Can anyone imagine a starting infiled that include Gonzalez and Perez?

I shudder at the thought.

Can't see the Cubs wanting Gonzalez. Probably just using him as leverage w/ Furcal. Am sure they want to get Furcal signed asap.

How in the wide wide world of sports could Gonzalez ever be used as leverge?

If I am Furcal I say go right ahead. Have a good time finishing 5th.

That is b/c Neifi is plan A for second base. Cedeno hasn't played one inning at second this winter.

I really doubt Furcal wants to play CF or 2b in NY. If he doesn't like it, let him resign w/ Atl for $5-10 million less.

He hasn't? I though he did for some reason. I am very likely wrong though. I should probably just face the fact that Perez will be in the line-up come spring. :x

How about a lineup with AGony II starting at SS and Neifi at 2B? With Cedeno on reserve? They could catch the ball, that's for sure. That would get the board jazzed I'm sure!

If AGon and Perez are our IF for 2006 its going to be a very long season. One I will not watch.

If that's the starting infield next year, my own business will reap tremendous rewards as I dedicate a bigger portion of my life away from Cubs baseball.

Alex Gonzalez. Alex Gonzalez? Alex "The Out Making Machine" Gonzalez!!! Oh god please let me see a Alex Gonzalez/Nefei Perez Cub DP combo.

Freaking Cardinal fans! You gotta be loving this doo doo. We've got the money, we've got the talent, and our holes could be filled through Trade or FA this offseason. The Red Sox and White Sox have won a World Series, Houston has been to a World Series, the Cardinals are strong, and I've got 30 years experience telling me a Gonzalez/Perez middle infield wreaks of a classic Cub move.

Even with the best possible DP combo - Walker/Furcal or Cedeno/Furcal, the Cubs hopes are still tied to pitching. Give me a healthy Wood and Prior each making 27+ starts and I'll have a contender even with a DP combo of Perez/Gonzalez. If the injury bug that has hit the Cubs' staff the last two years were to strike the Cards next season how much difference would their great lineup make?

Wow, NY, reading that just made me feel ill. none of us wanted to be right about that one :(

And hey, the other agonz is coming off his career high year for OBP.

It's AGone II: The Next Whiff

Oh yeah. And guess what? The tix will sell out in February just like they always do. Tell me the Cubs have a sense of urgency to win. Go ahead. I dare ya.

IMO, that is putting a lot of pressure on our young pitchers when the Cubs have the resources to take some of that pressure off them.

The February sell-outs are a new phenomenon, they'll end if the team reverts to mediocrity for an extended period.

Extrapolating a report in a Florida paper speculating who the Cubs' back-up plan at SS is to their urgency to win is quite a leap.

Because I don't think anybody believes that Nomar can still play a passable shortstop.
