A few phrases came to mind when I read this:

Ouch.

No way.

Riiiight.

Good luck.

You're crazy.

Negotiation ploy to get a 5 year deal.

But if you're on the Giles to Cubs bandwagon, a cautionary note:

"The Yankees were discouraged by Scott Boras' asking price of $84 million over seven years for Johnny Damon, so they will look seriously at signing Brian Giles with the thought of using a rotation in centerfield. The Yankees are thinking about offering Giles, 34, close to $30 million for three years, but they want to investigate whether he seriously will consider coming to New York, a person familiar with the situation said."

Didn't Boras start the bidding for Beltran at $20 million a year for 10 years?

Giles loves California. NY is about as far away from the California lifestyle as you can get. Can't see him there. He'll get a lot of money someplace else.

You mean Johnny, right?

No, I'm pretty sure he means Giles. Both are discussed in the thread. Damon lives in Orlando anyway.

Jeez, it was even in bold print! I don't know how I missed that the first time.

Now that I'm hip to the whole conversation I'd like to say the Cubs should try to beat 3yr./30m offer to Giles.

I can't see any team coming anywhere near that price and length of contract with all the seemingly available CF through trades. Most I see a team giving him is a 4 year contract.

Excuse me for one minute.....

BAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Seconded. This smacks of last year's Beltran situation, except that he's a legitimate first class OF (last year's stats not withstanding).

Conclusion: Boras took a hit of coke prior to making this statement. He's full of it.

Evidently the Red Sox have provided Mr. Boras with a reality check.

The Red Sox are expected to make their opening offer to Johnny Damon in the next couple of days -- it's expected to be in the three-year, $25 million-$27 million range -- and are making their interest known in both A.J. Burnett and B.J. Ryan. The Sox, concerned about the age of their rotation and health issues involving Curt Schilling, also have interest in Kevin Millwood but will explore trade possibilities for a starting pitcher as well.

Who is making the offers? It'll be interesting to see if they start making big decisions before even hiring a GM.

Well, at least they understand one of their major problems.

I'm not sure Hendry does. If he's going after Alex Gonzalez as some kind of solution at SS, then I think it's safe to say 'ol Jimbo's sanity is in question.

It would be interesting to see what Boras would ask for if he had a real star free agent this year. Looking at these numbers, Pujols would be looking at $500 million over 15 years, Zambrano would be worth $200 million over 10 years, and Cabrera would be worth $400 million over 15 years. What a joke, cut the money and years each in half and you might have a starting point.

7 yrs $84 mill for a 32 yr old CF, who hadn't recieved that kind of "love" that Boras prolly promise during the offseason. Who thinks the longer Boras keeps the 7 yr $84 mill mantra up, the longer Damon will remain unsign, or ends up in Detroit (who has the reigning patsy of an owner)?

Sorry, CAPTAIN CAAAAVVVVEEEEEMMMMAAAAANNNNNNN, it would be a stretch if Johhny even got half of the demand, much less the full amount. But call ka-razy, but no team (including the morons in NY) is going to give a 32 yr old, pretty weak defensive CF that kind of money. Heck it wouldn't surprise me, if tells ignore Damon till 2006.

These agents have yet to figure out that 1998-2001 is over. The only guys that will get 5+ year deals are SUPERSTARS.

Boras may want to back off if he knows what's good for his client (well, he probably doesn't know what's good). Boston has the prospects to trade for Juan Pierre or the like. Once Boston is out of the picture, only the Yankees remain as a big time spender. With no one competing with the Yankees, even Cashman could play a litte hardball with Boras.

Didn't we think the same thing last offseason? The market was down, no way were guys like Varitek, Lowe, Drew, Renteria, etc. getting the deals they were demanding. Turns out, almost everyone got what they intially demanded. Nothing would surprise me.

Beltran and Drew were the only ones that got longer than 4 years, if memory serves. Damon may con someone into giving him 12 million, but the length I think is what BBB was getting at mostly.
