Nobody has any idea what the plans are for this organization.

Yes we do. This organization is really predictable at times. If you've been hanging around this message board for a couple of years you'll find numerous instances in which the majority of members here knew exactly what the organization was going to do before it did it.

At this point I'm willing to give Hendry the benefit of the doubt, I'll wait on his remaining offseason moves. But, if he trades Walker and signs Furcal, Cedeno might as well buy himself a copy of War & Peace for 2006 bench reading. Edited by gflore34

Waaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!

This board is getting out of hand. There's more whining going on in here than Matt Morris and Jim Edmonds deciding which is the greatest boy band of all time, NSYNC or Backstreet Boys.

Give it a rest already. Neifi is back, deal with it. Its November freakin 8th. I'll judge this team in March, not November. Contray to the popular opinion, Neifi isn't worthless. Does he have weaknesses, of course. But lets not get carried away here.

Nobody has any idea what the plans are for this organization. And everybody here thinks they have all the answers and know better than those in charge. Again, its Nov 8th. If Hendry and company fail to improve this team and they have another season like last year than I agree a change my be in order.

I don't blame Hendry for Nomar ripping his groin, Prior's heel/elbow, Wood's latest injury of the month. See what they put together before you rip it to shreds. Its November people...

Is it really over reacting to a pattern that repeats itself? I agree with you that it's only November but Hendry is continuing to do things the same way he always has and is expecting different results.

Bruno i dont think anyone has ripped Hendry for injuries etc what people are dissapointed in is his lack of a plan it always seems to be off the cuff and never a series of strategic moves to help the team. If he does this and we makes proggress i will praise him but so far this off season the most positive thing we have to talk about is the bears !! go figure...
This is absurd. Of course the man has a plan. I don't think GMs are in the business of revealing their hands before the time comes.

He has stated clearly in general terms that he wants pitching and defense to be the core of this team, and all of the signings and major rumblings point to this as being true.

I dont think this is over reaction last year we sat back and hendry made what he thought were the correct moves under the circumstances ie Sosa etc. During the season i cant recall people ripping hendry for the injuries but dont let Dusty and JH hide behind the putrid play from many players last year. Look no further than the manager and GM for the pathetic fundimental baseball we played last year. Just remember if moves like this keep happening until march you cant polish a turd........It is what it is.

Its absurd to think Hendry doesn't have a plan is it??? Well was last seasons off season plan to sit and wait for the only available RF to have no other options and sign him because there was no one else?? Nice plan i'm on board......

Wasting 2.5 million a year on a defensive replacement is stupid!!!

Unfortunately in the eyes of the organization Neifi is not a defensive replacement, he is an everyday top-of-the-order player.

Posted
I'm not going to lose it....just as long as he doesn't start.

Ever.

Let's take a look at the situations here:

Sign Furcal, keep Walker

Neifi is redundant with Cedeno already around, bad move.

Sign Nomar, keep Walker

Same thing, you don't need two players for the same job, and you don't need to be signing one to a two year deal when the other is much younger, cheaper, and in all likelihood better.

Sign Furcal/Nomar, trade Walker

Now we have Cedeno and Neifi both vying for 2B. Uh-oh. Bad move.

Sign no one, keep Walker

Same thing, except at SS. Can't have those tailing throws messing things up.

Sign Furcal/Nomar, keep Walker, trade Cedeno

This is the only situation where Neifi isn't excessive, or at high-risk to be the everyday starter. How likely is this situation, and what are the odds keeping Neifi and trading Cedeno improves the team?

This is a terrible, terrible move.

I'm just wondering whether Cedeno is going to be used in a trade. With Cedeno, Walker, Perez, Hairston, and Furcal (?) as middle infielders, I would think that 2 of them have to go. Obviously, Walker is gone. I would think Hairston's ability to back up CF would keep him on the team. So, I was wondering about Cedeno as part of a package for Castillo. I still think Cedeno is going to be a good IF for a lot of years, but you have to wonder about the signing of Perez. As some people suggested (hoped), maybe some team wants Perez and wanted a 2-year contract.

It's a message board, pal. People have the right to voice their opinions, and frankly I happen to agree that this is not a good signing.

Signing Neifi to be a backup middle infielder isn't all that bad. Signing Neifi for TWO YEARS and $5 million is a bad idea, especially when you have Ronny Cedeno who at worst would probably post similar numbers to Neifi. Plus, when you have a manager that won't hesitate to give Neifi several starts AND bat him near the top of the order, it becomes a bad signing.

IF the Cubs sign Furcal, then you will most likely see Walker dealt and Neifi "competing" with Cedeno for playing time at 2B. I don't view that as a good situation.

Estes, Alf, Holla, Macias, Perez, Blanco, and Burnitz are all examples of overpaying for mediocre talent. Rusch may also be added to the list.

Again, Neifi is either on the bench with Cedeno, which is stupid since they both play the same position(s), or competing with Cedeno for a starting spot, which is a dangerous dangerous thing. Cedeno shouldn't be starting unless we have big upgrades elsewhere, and Neifi shouldn't be starting at all. This is a waste, plain and simple.

What moves can he make yet? He can't sign any free agents other than his own. Rusch was retained because of the gazillion pitching injuries they have endured over the past two seasons. Rusch has been yoyo'ed (even a word?) between the rotation and relief. I think he's done a decent job despite that. I assumed he would be back from the start. Hendry obviously feels he is valuable asset to have, considering someone probbaly will go down this year on the staff.

Perez, same way. He is a good backup. I agree that Baker favors veterans, but early in the year what choice did he have but to play Neifi? I'm with you, I don't really want Perez to be starting next year any more than you do. But I'm not going to burn Hendry in flames before he has a chance to put together a whole team.

Thats what I'm trying to get across. I want to see the whole picture, not just the minor pieces.

I'd be very suprised if Hendry isn't keeping 2B open for Neifi. He's not being paid $2.5M to sit on the bench. I suppose that could change if someone offers a deal for a veteran 2B that is too good to refuse.

I must be simple can someone explain this to me.If we sign furcal and already have walker cedeno and Jerry H where does this move fit??. Can we trade Perez or is there a date we can't trade him until??. i just dont understand how this helps the team...
Posted
I despise this move as much as most on this board but I'm holding out hope that there is an alterior motive behind this signing, like helping to bring Furcal here and/or Cedeno being a part of a package that is going to net the Cubs a premier corner OF (crosses fingers).

The only way i'll forgive Hendry for this MI debacle is if he signs Furcal for less than 4/36 to start at SS, gets Marcus Giles at 2B and trades Cedeno and Walker. Otherwise our middle infield is going to be a joke.

I don't think Cedeno has shown enough to start every day at 2B or SS, but come on! Neifury at 2B? Well, at least we'll have good middle infield defense.

The real stink of it is that Neifi will bat 2nd with walker pawned off in a future hendry trade. What other decent 2 hole hitter do we have?

I'm at a loss for words. Really. I can't decide whether I feel angry or entirely helpless. I want to leave this team behind, but I just can't.

And if this weren't a family board...

That's very logical thinking Bruno but Hendry is giving alcohol to an alcoholic. I agree that waiting to see what team he has in place in March is what we should wait for. I just do not think that Mr. Hendry has figured out how to assemble a winning team and signing Perez is an example of this. Yes...no doubt Perez would be fine as a defensive replacement but Hendry knows who is in charge of the lineups and since Hendry seems oblivious to this fact or agrees with it makes me think that he is not the right man for this job. I'll wait while gritting my teeth but I do not have any hope that Hendry will make this team any better.
