Anyone know about Cory Patterson's status regarding winter ball? Is he planning to go and work on his game or is he flipping through the yellow pages looking for a moving company for the inpending trade?

Depending on the signing of Furcal. I'd give CP another chance if he did something over the winter to get better and if Furcal takes the lead off spot, thus taking the pressure off CP to play his game.

And if he tears up Winter ball and spring training, would you still want to trade him? Or keep him for at least the first half of the year?

I never want to trade him. I still believe in him and his ability to be a great baseballer. I just hope he matures and grows into the part. Last year was very frustratiing for Cubs fans and Cory, I bet. I hope he, Murton and Greenberg come up so the Cubs fans can watch them take off.

If we upgrade our lineup we can still have Corey on this team, put him in the 8th hole and still be productive.

I agree. Building a reliance on CP for team success is a high risk. But IMO he's has to much of an up side to trade him away for tickets to Cats!

Getting a lead-off guy and building a line up based more on OBP then HR. The Cubs could have a better formula then last year of free swing.

1/2 season of winter ball? What a poor attitude.

For those of you who tell non-Corey fans that they don't know his mindset, what he's thinking, how much he cares about the game, this helps solidify that the non-Corey fans are correct.

I'm a fan of Corey's talents, but not a fan of Corey's attitude, intelligence, on-field results or respect for the game.

Towards the end of the regular season, reporters kept asking Corey if he will play winter ball. He telled us a lot by skirting the question. The fact that that question was even asked, tells us that his game needs much improvement and his "answer" tells us that he's not interested in putting in the work to get better.

I'm done with this loser.

This year is probably Corey's last opportunity to stick around as a starter in this league. I'm glad he will actually be playing in winter ball. I hope he focuses on one thing...plate patience. We all know what a difference it would make for this team and Corey if he were actually patient at the plate.

Whoa. The line for Corey bashing usually forms right behind me, but this is a bit much. The fact that he is going at all should tell you something about his "mindset." He's a professional athlete for goodness sakes. I'm sure he doesn't enjoy being awful at the plate. Let him go work on it, show up early for spring training- again, and let the winter play out. At least there is an effort to improve.

I am one of those that always lines up to bash Corey but have you even looked at this offseason so far?

Poor Attitude? He showed up in Mesa 4 Days after the regular season to revamp his swing, he has blamed no-one except himself for his poor performance this year and he is playing half a season of winter ball. Just going to winter ball to play will do absolutely nothing for him unless he works on his swing first. He seems to be taking the right steps to try and improve. Lets hold off until spring training on calling him a loser until we can see if the changes helped.

Time off and 1/2 of winter ball is all I'd really hoped for. Time off to clear his head of Cubs fans booing him and 1/2 of the winter ball to work on his game.

I like the move. It's better then not doing a thing. I still hold hope. The medicholride readings are very strong in this one. He can still be trained.

If Corey truly needs tim off to clear his head of CUBS fans booing him... he will never be back.

I doubt he's back regardless, unless it's as a reserve player.

You're probably right. I meant back more in the sense of returning to his 2003 form, or, more generally, attaining his potential.

Fred, the fact that Cory, going through a rough season, getting booed by what people claim to be the best fans in baseball, yeah I'd want to take some time away and put things in perspective a little. Probably become a little more reserved to the "fans" and concentrate on my job a little more. Unfortunately he's learning the wrong things fronm Dusty Baker when it comes to dealing with the media (and public) and taking all that is said about you to heart. So if and or when he comes back it'll be all about the game, his game and not about his bad attitude or uncoachable attitude.

I hope he put's it all together and proves the NSBB CP nay sayers wrong. We'd be alot happier if he did.

I believe the only way Corey gets back on track is if he leaves the Cubs. He looked mentally shot last year and to make matters worse after Latroy left he became the new whipping boy at Wrigley. I hope the best for the guy, he always seemed like a class act to me.

Kind of how Cubs fans felt about Ankiel: Felt sorry for him, hoped he got it together somewhere, just not in St Louis!

Playing a 1/2 season of winter ball doesn't tell me anything positive about his mindset. It says he will do just enough to get his critics and Hendry off his back, but not as much as a player who really wants to reach his potential would.

And I'd hope he doesn't enjoy being awful at the plate, but if I were in his shoes when asked by reporters if I'd consider winter ball, I'd enthusiastically respond with a: "YES! I'm having a very poor year and I have disappointed Cubs fans and the team, but I know I can do better. I plan on getting better by playing the game when most MLB players aren't: in winter ball."

"But my game isn't the only thing I need to improve on. I'm also going to adjust my attitude, because there were times when I just didn't care about the game. Remember my 'It's just a game' comment? I'm going to work on my intelligence too."

Yeah. You'd say that. Right.

You're reading way too much into his 1/2 season of winter ball. Besides, why is winter ball the cure for all his ills? Who's to say that one-on-one personal instruction down in Mesa wouldn't be better for him?

He's working on his game this off-season. That's the bottom line. He had a lousy season, and he's working to get better. That's all you can ask of him.
