The problem is that we have lots of candidates for #4 and #5 (Maddux, Rusch, Williams, etc.) and most of the people you mentioned aren't much better than what we have.

Valid point. I, for one, though have been wondering why we haven't heard Washburn rumblings considering JH's apparent love affair with a left handed starter any way he can get one.

His name is Glendon Rusch.

I want another bona fide stud SP. We already have enough 4 and 5 types. Wood is a good bet to break down midseason and Prior is a question mark, so if it were up to me I'd invest some big bucks in an SP now. Kerry must be replaced after 2006 anyway, so why not do it now? The money is there, if it isn't wasted on Furcal.

Rotation is set! No need to post anymore Burnett/Millwood/Washburn going to the Cubs posts.

No, the rotation is not set. Rusch isn't assured of a rotation spot. The only real shoe-ins are Z, Prior, Wood (if healthy), and most likely Maddux. One spot, maybe more, is open.

Naw, given the current personnel, it's pretty much set, assuming everyone stays healthy through spring. Rusch would have to be really horrible in spring not to get the 5 spot. But, if Hendry gets another top-shelf starter then things get interesting.

The only spot in the rotation that's still up for grabs is the #5 spot & that's between Rusch & Williams. If Williams is traded than Rusch is the 5th SP, if he is not traded, more than likely, Williams will be the #5 starter & Rusch will be the long reliever/swingman out of the pen. The only way both are in the rotation if one of the top 4 guys gets hurt. Williams is better used out of the rotation, so any suggestions he needs to go to the BP will make no sense.

I strongly disagree. Rusch is a lefty, a veteran, has accumulated some tenure with Dusty and the Cubs, makes $3M per year, and is signed for 2 years. Dusty also has a history of being very tolerant of bad spring performances from his favorite veterans. Dusty will not have this be an even competition for the 5 slot. Williams will have to outplay Rusch by a wide margin to get the job.

2004: Sergio Mitre has a +6 ERA in spring, Jimmy Anderson has a sub-2.50 and Mitre gets the last starting slot. Never was happy with that.

is there any way the cubs could trade maddux if he does decide to come back in 2006 (does he have a no trade clause in his 06 option?)? they could pick up a good portion of maddux's salary & put williams in the rotation.

Maddux does have a no trade clause. It highly unlikely he gets moved.

I think that Jerome is one of Dustys favorites. When he had a rough stretch last year he wasnt removed from the starting rotation like Rich Hill. I think he will be the 5th starter this year. I am not exstatic about it but he will be in the upper half of 5th starters in the league. I also think we are done going after starting pitching. I also dont think what is on the list is a major upgrade over what we already have.

If we are done with starting pitching then we better really use this cash and make a fantastic offense.

In all likelihood, Hendry is assuming either Prior or Wood to be down at the start of next year, and then making his rotation accordingly. Which means that there still is a possibility of Burnett or Washburn.

In related news, Burnett just visited with the Blue Jays for the weekend, where the Blue Jays owner announced in increased budget from ~55 to ~85 million. Pair him up with Takin' a Holiday and that sounds like a little more competition in the AL East.

That would be a nice 1-2 punch. Toronto has some young players that are pretty good.

Jeff Weaver. I wonder if the market will dry up and he'll be forced to go for a 1-year make good deal like Kevin Millwood. Though, Millwood still got a lot of money.
