Schneider got jobbed.

no worries, he'll start winning these when he's 38 or so.

He needs to hire someone to start talking up his leadership abilities, then start hitting for a low 600s OPS, that should do the trick.

Pitchers need to talk about what a great game he calls.

I don't know, but Maddux didn't strike me as wondrous out there. Maybe my expectations for Maddux are extraordinarily high, but he didn't seem to be much better than any of our other pitchers. On occasion he'd make an exceptional play, other times he'd commit a flub. In fielding prowess, he didn't seem to be any better than Carlos Zambrano (if anything, I'd rate Carlos higher).

In all fairness, if Carlos had made that behind the back between the legs toss to DLee for the out, I don't see any way Z wouldn't have won this award. That particular play would have been on highlight reels for decades to come, imo.

I would've voted John Smoltz. He had good numbers at most every stat and had no errors compared to Maddux's 3.

That is true. However, it looks like Maddux had more Double plays and more assists in 5 less innings, and also had a 2.72 Range Factor compared to 2.08 of Smoltz.

For fun, I looked at Z-machine, and although he had one less error, he had less assists and double plays, and also had a 2.22 Range Factor.

Obviously you missed Z's summersault.

Was that when he tried to slide?

No, he was fielding a ball on the right side of the infield and sorta tripped and threw the ball and then did a summersault afterwards.

They ought to call this the: "Reputation and Sportscenter Highlite Award"

Or Rasha

The Reputation/SportsCenter Fielding Award Sponsored by ESPN

Hmmm...has a kind of ring to it.

I am just glad Neifi didn't win one, even if he was probably more deserving than Omar Vizquel. Myself, I would have given it to Jack Wilson.

Vizquel got it by name as Jack Wilson was more deserving. Wilson had Vizquel by high margins in Range Factor and Zone Rating. He also was involved in a whopping FORTY-FIVE more double plays than Vizquel.

My ballot at SS would have been:

1. Jack

2. Neifi

3. Vizquel

I would have given it to Khalil Greene. That guy is a human vacuum cleaner whenever anyone hits a ball between 2nd and 3rd.

He made quite a few errors this year, if I remember correctly.

By the press he's getting this winter, I thought that Furcal would win easy. After all, can't he field three grounders at the same time? All while rescuing babies from burning buildings?

That's Carlos Beltran.

What about Reyes? He seems to take away a hit every game I see.

BP has Reyes as a below average defensively. 96 rate and 7 runs below average

Just announced on ESPN News a second ago:

P- G. Maddux

1b- D. Lee

Congrats to Maddux and D. Lee for winning.

Cubs.com informed me that Maddux & Lee are the first Cubs teammates to win GGs since 1992. 2 minutes at baseballreference.com dredged up this trivia info (please post any corrections if I goofed up).

The GGs have been awarded since 1957.

Maddux holds the NL records for total number of GGs (15) and the number of GGs by a pitcher. He also holds the record for the number of GGs by a pitcher awarded within either league.

Jim Kaat holds the overall record for total number of GGs (16) by a pitcher. He won 14 in the AL and 2 in the NL.

Brooks Robinson ties with Kaat for the most GGs (16) and holds the most GGs awarded within one league.

Cubs teammates who have won gold gloves:

2005: Maddux & Lee

1992: Maddux & Grace

1991: Maddux & Sandberg

1990: Maddux & Sandberg

1988: Dawson & Sandberg

1987: Dawson & Sandberg

1984: Dernier & Sandberg

1967: Santo & Hundley

His error count isn't fair. Due to his absolutely incredible range, he gets dinged with errors for plays that *hes* expected to make, even though it's likely no one else could have made them. That likely does work against him in the GG race, but he's my favorite defensive SS in the game.
