Just heard some tidbits on the score and Hendry was talking about the signing and he had to say that he signe dhim because Rusch is a very good clubhouse guy and also, there were nto many options available out there that could do his role. What a bunch of crock. So let's go out there and sign the best cluibhouse guys..World Series here we come. What a crock.

Has he learned nothing from last off season? Chemistry is such overrated garbage.

I'm telling you there is a reason why year in year our we always have the same glaring holes. No game plan.

NO BUT THE WHITE SOX WON THE WS WITH PITCHING AND DEFENSE SO EVERYONE SHOULD GET THAT PLUS SCOTT PODSEDNIK PLAYS SMALLBALL I HATE HOMERUNS

the last couple of years it's like hendry tries to copy whatever the last ws champ did. the red sox were such a close knit, team chemistry delight he got rid of all the bad attitudes. the white sox apparently had their success w/ pitching and defense, so that's what hendry wants to do.

it's too bad he didn't pick up on the red sox love for OBP and stud sluggers to drive runs in.

Tell the 05 White Sox, 04 Red Sox, 03 Marlins, 02 Angels and the 96-2000 Yankees that.

I will tell them that and I won't forget to mention how those teams had either very strong pitching and/or the ability to score a lot of runs. I have no problem with a team liking each other but I think its ridiculous to think that's the reason why they were successful. My comment was geared at Hendry for trying to rid this team of all its malcontents after the '04 season.(Sosa, Mercker, Alou, and Farnsworth) That sure didn't work for the '05 season. Right after signing a player, I'd prefer if my GM didn't use "he's a very good clubhouse guy" as a major reason why he was signed.

Sure, but other teams had strong pitching or strong hitting too. Those teams just had an extra something that got them over the top.

Chemistry may not be essential, but it can help.

The empirical evidence suggests they got along well, which helped their performance as a team.

um...sure.

and this year's cub team supposedly got along great (or so empirical evidence suggests), and they sucked big time.

They didn't have the talent to compliment the camaraderie.

The notion of Chemistry is overrated garbage, when one looks a little deeper; the common element to all of the above teams was pitching and defense. How did the 72-74 Oakland A's win those consecutive WS with their Chemistry of fighting amongst themselves and basically disliking each other? What was more crucial to their success Chemistry or a rotation that included the likes of Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue, and Ken Holtzman along with Rollie Fingers in the pen? A healthy Prior (maybe Borowski as well) in 2004 and a healthy Wood and Prior in 2005 and we're talking 3 consecutive playoff appearances for the Cubs.

I lived in Anaheim in 02 and according to the local media the Angels got along quite well. I recall the Yankees getting along well during their title run. The Marlins gelled under McKeon.

Did they win because they got along well, or did they get along well because they were winning?

both

I don't think chemistry is the critical factor in a teams success, but it is hard to argue against the idea that feeling good about your job and having a positive environment to work in positively effects performance, regardless of what you do for a living.

In sports, though, I think winning breeds good chemistry.

Yes and no, IMO. It can also foster ego and arrogance in individuals.

Also, if you have a few guys who can't stand each other, winning will not change that.

Was waiting for this example. Great talent can overcome no chemistry. Good luck stockpiling all that talent though.

great self-sealing argument.

Why did the Marlins fall apart this past season under the same leadership of Jack McKeon? They had good chemistry in '03 and didn't this year? How can a team like the White Sox win the World Series and have malcontents like Everett, Marte and Pierzynski playing key roles? It seems chemistry is good only when people see them laughing and joking around in the dugout, drinking Jack Daniels before games, or listening to bad '80's hair band music together on team flights. We, as fans, don't really have any insight into what happens behind the scenes in a clubhouse. Numerous players came out in support of LaTroy Hawkins this year after he was traded and said he was a great teammate, but to most fans he appeared to be aloof. Team chemistry is just added when people are looking for a reason why certain teams are successful. Edited by Mark Prior's Calves
