I heard Mr. Gammons on ESPN radio this morning make these comments about various players/teams in the offseason:

Mets: "one impact bat and one decent bullpen arm away from being the best team in the NL East - they've got the money to do it"

Paul Konerko: "my gut says Konerko will remain with the White Sox"

Billy Wagner: "Phillies will get a deal done"

Nomar Garciaparra: "I wouldn't be surprised to see Nomar playing LF for the Cubs"

AJ Burnett: "Usual suspects in the bidding - he'll get Pavano money + 30%"

BJ Ryan: "He'll get to the mint"

Johnny Damon: "I don't think it will be the Yankees"

Manny Ramirez: "if dealt, he'll end up in Arizona or Anaheim, and I wouldn't be surprised to a see a 3-way with Troy Glaus going to Boston, Manny to Anaheim and top Angel prospects sent to the Diamondbacks"

No mention of Furcal, Giles or Clemens.

so it is definite that there will be no more nomar for the cubs.

If the Cubs are stupid enough to play a guy with 2 years of leg inuries in the OF with no prior experience over a cheap, talented alternative, then this organization deserves all the criticism it gets.

Unless the Cubs are moving Murton to SS in a double switch.

That would prove the existence of the "Dusty Dice".

And be hilarious. While they're at it they should move ARam to CF, Lee to C and Barrett to closer.

Once Macias went to CF anything is possible. I'll take Glendon being signed as long as Macias, Perez and Burnitz are not.

Macias in CF... What a joke that was.

I would also take that tradeoff.

I dont mind seeing Neifi resigned if Nomar/Furcal is the starter. Rest them on certain days or ARam with Nomar at 3rd and put Neifi for SPOT duty while Cedeno stays in the minors. If neither of them are signed then we start cedeno and again, Neifi makes only spot starts.

I want Neifi Perez nowhere near this team. Baker would find too many ways to get him playing time, even if those guys ahead of him didn't get hurt.

Not only that, but Neifi doesn't do anything particularly well...we can likely get better than his production from Cedeno (in the case of an injury)...

Oh, come on....you got to love the versatility that Macias brings. :roll:

I mean could you imagine where the Cubs would had been without the superstars of Nefti Perez (here's to you Jon Miller, Nefti Payraise) and Jose Macias? I can't imagine the depths of hell, the Cubs could had been without these guys. :lol:

I think you are really on to something here, USS. Ramirez would give the Cubs their best offensive CF ever! And Lee would easily be the best offensive catcher in the majors. Plus, he is used to blocking throws in the dirt, so he has a leg up on the position defensively! Barrett's got a heck of an arm, too, so he could easily make the switch to closer. The main problem would be to get him to stop throwing the ball to 2nd base all the time. But I think Rothschild can get him pointed in the right direction.

With Lee at catcher, the Cubs sign Konerko to play first. They bring up Pie to play 3B and move Dempster to RF.

Done.

Can Dempster hit? I suppose if he can't we can just bat him leadoff just like we put all our scrubs who can't hit in that spot. :)

Well since the option for Burnitz was declined im thinking Murton is a given in the Of and isnt holly gone too?

OF could be

Nomar

Murton

Pie

or something from a trade so i wouldnt shun it especially if cedeno is everyday at SS and murton in OF

I wouldn't say Murton is a given....remember, Johnnie B. is still here.

Hollandsworth is gone. That's a plus.

Another thread derailed so people can bash Dusty, Macias, and Perez. How original!

On topic - I think Gammons is spot on with the returning players. Wagner and Konerko probably stay put. Manny won't go anywhere.

Ryan and Burnett will get big deals, that's a bit of a no-brainer.

With regards to Garciaparra - why wouldn't it be feasible to play Murton in right? Because of his arm? Nomar in right? I'm not sure why Nomar on the Cubs means Murton doesn't play the other corner spot.

It is not wise to put a player with a 2 year history of serious leg injuries in an OF spot, particularly when he has no experience doing so. If Nomar isn't a SS, he has much less value, and I'd rather pay Murton the leage minimum to get about the same production with a far less risk of injury than I would bring Nomar back at 10 times the cost just in case he can master LF. Do we really need more questions in our OF?

My understanding is that Murton does not have the arm strength to play RF effectively. Now, if he's playing RF in the Fall Leagues, and the Cubs plan to give him instruction there in Spring, I suppose anything is possible. I just don't think it's probable.

Given his lack of experience, his lack of mobility, and his throwing problems, I'd rather not see Nomar in the outfield.

Shall we not forget Moises? I know he was an outfielder by trade, but not a very good one.

Murton has been playing LF in the Fall League from what I've heard.

Bump!

Just heard Gammons on the Dan Parick Show with more FA signing predictions. Here is what I remember:

Furcal--> Cubs

Giles--> Cubs "the early leader for his services"

B.J. Ryan--> Mets or possibly Boston or Detroit

Damon--> Boston

Bernie Williams--> DH for Texas

Konerko--> White Sox "Wouldn't surprise me to see them trade Garcia and have Mccarthy takes his spot.

Nomar--> Open to position change (i.e. outfield) Dodgers interested, no mention of Cubs.

Wagner--> Philly

Sosa--> Whoever gives him a 1/yr 5-6Million first

Palmeiro--> Retirement

Did Gammons say anything about Neifi or Macias? :D

I guess this means that we can cross Furcal and Giles off of our list. No way they're coming here now.
