Bump!

Just heard Gammons on the Dan Parick Show with more FA signing predictions. Here is what I remember:

Furcal--> Cubs

Giles--> Cubs "the early leader for his services"

Gammons is almost never right about such things, but those two signings would be huge.

I'm not so sure about that. If he is commenting that, at this early stage of the game, the Cubs appear to be the most aggressive, there is nothing wrong with that.

Gammons is not wrong often about which teams are talking to which players. He only has a bad track record when making final predictions.

Did Gammons say anything about Neifi or Macias? :D

I guess this means that we can cross Furcal and Giles off of our list. No way they're coming here now.

O ye, of little faith

I don't think Gammons is really that bad. I listen to what he has to say when it comes to FA signings more than I do trades. Maybe its just me, but he does usually have a good handle on the FA market.

He mentioned that there is a ton of money out on the market this year, and a down crop of players. Thought earlier in the year B.J. Ryan could get 6Mil/per year. Now he thinks he will get a tleast 8Mil/per year.

I was about to post the same thing. Gammons has a decent idea of what's going on, he just isn't very good at interpreting that info into what's going to happen.

I was kidding (mostly). Gammons seems to have tons of inside information about what teams are going after what players. He just doesn't seem to put that information to good use when he makes his predictions.

He analyzes very well, he doesn't synthesize very well.

If Gammons is proven to be correct - that the Cubs are being aggressive with regad to acquiring Brian Giles - can we please stop the "Hendry doesn't even try" stuff? I know that not everyone on the bd. believes this, yours truly included.

If anything, the news for me is that Hendry is pursuing Giles, and it looks like the first reported instance of the Cubs being in the race for Giles services.

Previous reports/articles (except for in Chicago) did not list the Cubs as a player.

I did not think the Cubs would have a chance at Giles. I don't mind being proven wrong.

I'm trying to figure out how the CUBS could be charachterized as aggressive or the early leader when we are in the middle of a period where only the previous team (in this case San Diego) can negiotiate with a player. Am I missing something ??

During this period, other teams cannot talk money with declared free agents, but they can express interest and have general discussions about length of contract, role, etc.

Or so I understand.

OK, that's fair enough.

Nomar--> Open to position change (i.e. outfield) Dodgers interested, no mention of Cubs.

Please be right this time Peter.

If Hendry plans to trade Patterson which I think he does I hope he lets Atlanta keep Furcal and help us reunite the Giles Brothers with Patterson as bait.

Lofton 1.5 million

Giles 5 million

B.Giles 12 million

Dotel 3 million

Nomar 4 million

spend the rest on some bench help or trade for another starter like Livan Hernadez. Wouldn't Millwood look great in Cubbie Blue?

If by "great" you mean "awful", then yes.

:?:

I can understand wanting to allocate resources elsewhere than SP, but if we were to target one, Millwood would be my guy. Why don't you like him?

I would rather have Burnett.

If you're going to give big money to one of them, Millwood would be the safer bet,, bar none. Burnett may have more potential, but Millwood is a proven horse.

Burnett will be more expensive, and has been less effective aside from Millwood's poor 2004, which appears to be an aberration at this point.
