How good is Will Carroll, usually?

Very little credibility. I don't think there has ever been a major rumor that he has reportered (whether it involved the Cubs or Pete Rose being reinstated) that has turned out to be true.

Will Carroll also isn't a beat reporter. He doesn't try to break rumors or news. He's always been more of an analyst than a reporter. I don't think it's fair to say he has very little credibility because he's never broken a major rumor that came true.

Well, let me put it this way then, when it comes to rumors of this sort, Will "Pete Rose will be reinstated" Carroll has little credibility.

Rumors of this sort? The Pete Rose piece was not based on inside information...it wasn't a breaking piece, it wasn't based on supposed inside information, it was an editorial, based on his opinion, given what information was publicly available. He thought Rose would be reinstated, and was wrong. Big deal, the man's credibility shouldn't be affected by anything such as that. Offering an opinion in an editorial has no bearing as to his credibility when he says he knows something happened. Also, judging a writer on one wrong guess is a little myopic. If he says he's involved in the appeal process for someone that tested positive, there's no reason to doubt him. I sincerely doubt he's making the whole story up.

Maybe two different articles are being discussed. There's no question that Carroll learned from sources that Rose was to be reinstated and he wrote an article breaking the story.

Here's the opening paragraph from the article dated August 12th 2003

Pete Rose and Major League Baseball have reached an agreement that would allow him to return to baseball in 2004, and includes no admission of wrongdoing by Rose, Baseball Prospectus has learned. According to several sources, Rose signed the agreement after a series of pre-season meetings between Rose, Hall of Fame member Mike Schmidt, and at different times, high-level representatives of Major League Baseball, including Bob DuPuy, Major League Baseball's Chief Operating Officer, and Allan H. "Bud" Selig, Commissioner of Major League Baseball.

That may have been a follow up article I never caught, he had opined prior on the issue. Regardless, that article was probably based on something he was told by someone on the inside that turned out false. I don't think that by any means gives reason to believe he's making the whole story about the AL outfielder up.

when are we gonna get results? If it is Dye it will make my weekend.

I very much doubt we'll get any results, period.

Jermaine Dye? Really? Step away from the sour grapes for a minute, they aren't good for you.

You and me both.

Nah, nah, root for it to be Podsednik. Dye's actually a decent guy, and Podsednik still had the 2 big HRs in the playoffs that it nullifies their entire playoffs.

Stuff like this makes me laugh whenever people complain about White Sox fans and their so-called "sour grapes" attitude. If people would shut up around here, I really wouldn't know anything about how White Sox fans supposedly act, but I sure see plenty of the same stuff around here.

So you're in a fight. And you keep getting punched in the face. Over and over again. You realize their punches don't hurt that much so you continue to ignore them. Well recently this guy's acquired brass knuckles. So now his punches actually have something behind them. Do you continue to take the punches, or knee him in the balls?

You aren't really doing anything to him, its more like he grows breasts due to steroid use.

For those that missed it, Matt Lawton was nailed!

http://northsidebaseball.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=26299

If you read his quotes, Lawton claims he did not appeal his suspension. This rumor obviously involves someone in the appeals process. There could still be another one forthcoming.

I did read it. Maybe Carroll is full of it because Lawton fits the other parameters of being an OF on a postseason team. We shall see...

I'll admit it wasn't the juicy news I was looking for.

The MLB never releases the name of the substance for which a player is suspended. Perhaps we are offbase by thinking he was caught using steroids. Maybe he used another drug like cocaine or amphetamines (which have been big in baseball). Just a thought...

This doesn't necessarily equate to steroids:

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball today announced that Matt Lawton of the New York Yankees has been suspended 10 days, effective the start of the 2006 regular season, for violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

There was a follow-up interview with Carroll in regards to the rumor itself. Looks like the original rumor got blown up a tad. Ill post it below as finding it is a bit time-consuming.

From Baseball Musings:

Will Carroll Interview

Will Carroll offered me a chance to interview him about the steroid rumors, and I was more than happy to oblige. I submitted questions to Will by e-mail, and here are his replies.

Baseball Musings: You've helped confirm a rumor about an AL playoff outfielder testing positive for steroids. How did you come to have this information?

Will Carroll: This is false. I was involved in an appeals process, very tangentially. I don't know a name but have heard rumors, much as many journalists have. When Jamie asked the question, I confirmed that I had heard this rumor and due to my involvement with an appeal, I couldn't comment further. I didn't mean for this to be any confirmation.

As to my involvement, I was asked to comment on the nature of the substance, its use by players, and if I'd heard anything about the use of a certain "cocktail" of substances. There was nothing specific and I had no bearing that I know of on any hearings that may or may not have occurred. I'm certainly not an arbitrator or expert witness as some have speculated.

BM: I have heard from two sources that the player is not on the White Sox. Is this true?

WC: I don't know.

BM: When asked, "Is this a name we're actually going to care about?" by Jamie Monttram, you answered yes. Why do we care about this player?

WC: I think as baseball fans, we should care about any athlete. My perspective as someone that's followed this story as closely as anyone might be skewed a bit. If it is true that it's a playoff player, then it calls the integrity of the testing program into question and will be a media firestorm.

BM: Are we going to be surprised by the name? In other words, is it someone for whom the allegations are new?

WC: I don't know.

BM: Do you know if the drug detected is easily found in contaminated supplements?

WC: I can't comment on the actual substance, but cross-contamination of the substances that players have tested positive for this year is nearly impossible. Drugs like winstrol and the metabolites that are detected in drug tests are very specific.

BM: In your opinion, does the player have a good defense for why he tested positive?

WC: I do not know if he has any defense or what it is.

BM: When do you expect the decision to be made?

WC: I don't know. I still have a poor handle on how the process works. It appears to be much like the suspension appeals for a fight or hit batsmen - takes a while to get everyone together. The steps that the new policy calls for extends that period. It's too bad that this can't be enough of a priority to make everyone - agent, league, union - get together at the first possible opportunity.

BM: If the player is suspended, when does the suspension begin? Is it the first day of the 2006 regular season?

WC: That's consistent with the Heredia suspension, handed down recently.

Thanks, Will.

except the substance he did use was "leaked" as frequently happens during this process. it was steroids.
