This IS a rumor:

Cubs would get: Juan Pierre

Marlins would get: Corey Patterson and Rich Hill

according to rumor, the marlins proposed this trade

Here is my source

It also talks about Hendry's #1 free agent to pursue being brian giles and about B.J. Ryan possible being pursued.

I question the source, but since this can be a matter of discussion...

I kinda want the Cubs to trade for Juan Pierre despite some of my reservations for him. A couple of reasons...

1) Dusty Baker would never, ever, ever bat him anywhere other than leadoff. He'd never be tempted to lead off with Neifi, Macias, or some one equally terrible.

2) He did have a bit of a down year last season, but he has been productive in the past as a high contact kind of a guy. As long as he can post a reasonable OBP, be it through lots of BBs or a good AVG, I could live with it.

3) This gives plenty of breathing room for Felix Pie to grow, mature, and develop down in the minors. With Pierre, there won't be much pressure to rush him up to the majors.

4) The Marlins won't ask much for him, from what I can gather.

Now, he is not the ideal target in my mind. I think there are plenty of better options out there who could be acquired to play CF in terms of production. However, in terms of what the Cubs would have to give up (be it in money or players), I think Pierre could be had for a reasonable price.

As for Hill & Patterson? I think that's a bit too much. I could see a package of Patterson and two lesser prospects (like, say, Juan Mateo and Chris Walker) or Patterson and a decent prospect (David Aardsma, perhaps). Hill has a bit too high of an upside for me to be comfortable to ship him out in a deal like that.

I appreciate the link, but its not much of a source, is it? This is one Cubs blog (CubsNet) quoting another Cubs blog (Bleed Cubbie Blue). All BCB said was that Al Yellon's source told him a rumor. Who is Al Yellon? Who was his source? And how good of a rumor is it? Too many questions to trust this as anything other than heresay.

That said, I love hearing rumors, innuendo and heresay that says Hendry is targeting Brian Giles!

The trade idea, not so much. I like Hill, but I'd be willing to trade him, too. Just not for Pierre. The Cubs would be better off signing Lofton. They've got Pie coming in the later half of '06 if he is ready and they wouldn't have to give up anybody to sign him. Lofton is better than Pierre as a stopgap CFer, IMO.

Now if the Cubs can package Patterson, Hill and others for someone like Marcus Giles, Luis Castillo (injured hip and all), Placido Polanco or Brady Clark, that would be another story.

Juan Pierre had a .680 OPS last year. .680. six eight-oh. Once more, .680.

Whywhywhywhywhy

yup. no pierre in CF please.

i can't complain about the rumored interest in BJ Ryan though. i mentioned pursuing BJ in the Ryan Dempster extension thread and no one thought it was realistic. i guess there is one more [expletive] out there that thinks it's possible.

No thankyou. I'd almost rather have Kenny Lofton batting leadoff and playing CF than Pierre. Not worth it IMO. I do like the idea of Giles being Hendry's #1 priority though...

i do it in a second.

patterson is done. rich hill could be great, but who knows.

Yeah, .276/.326/.354, what a leadoff man.

heck, if he reproduced those stats he'd be one of the 10 best lead off hitters in cub history ;)

.355 Career OBP sounds pretty good in the leadoff spot. I know Pierre doesn't have the power numbers, but he would be a vast improvement offensively over Patterson.

Im sorry, but I do that trade in a heartbeat-Pierre is a PROVEN commodity in CF and leading off-We are not going to have the best player at EVERY position-My God you guys kill me sometimes with the overvalue placed on our prospects and I'm sorry but Patterson is DONE-If he recovers and has all-star numbers-great for him but this teams window is closing and I for one am tired of the hope of potential(albeit great potential) in Patterson figuring it out in his 6th year in the bigs? And Rich Hill, again with great potential, is not a MUST HAVE prospect in our system-we have plenty of arms that will be as good if not better than Hill- Pierre solves a couple of problems for us- He gives us a stopgap contract wise for Pie, plus like said before, Baker will bat him leadoff no matter what-no more experimental crap at the top-plus Pierre basically joined Pudge in nailing down our coffin in the playoffs a couple of years ago-he would be a great addition to our lineup-Not to mention the fact that we would only be paying about 3M for him if you take away Pattersons salary- I love Corey and Hill but we need to win NEXT YEAR or we will probably see our prize arms go and win in pinstripes while we are hopelessly putting our faith in the miracle prospect to lead us to the promised land-Patterson and hill for Pierre-Done in a second if offered-

blech. i would rather have the cubs sign lofton for a year or 2 and keep hill. not sure what will happen to cpat but i think his days in chicago are over.

I'd rather have Furcal. I'd rather have Lofton as a stop gap until Pie is ready.

Either of those can be had without giving up prospects.

Wow wow wow. Why and how could you sign Ryan to setup???

Also I think the only thing that Pierre proved last year is that he is not that good.

True, but the year before he won a World Series-I'll take my chances on him having a little better year this year than last-

If Bruce Miles says that we wouldn't trade Rich Hill for Adam Dunn straight up, what makes us think he'd trade Hill and Patterson for Pierre?
