I love watching this guy hit. He hits to all fields and has such a nice swing fro a righty. What I am curious about is how far apart his feet are. They look to be far outside of his shoulders and he just lifts his stride foot on each pitch. I wish kids would watch this guy because I'm constantly teaching kids not to over stride and Pujols is a great example of this.

He has a bit of Jeff Bagwell's swing in him, letting the torque of his upper body drive the ball.

I love the fact that he wanted to decrease his strikeouts from an already low number this year.

Why does this guy have to play for the Cards.....

He's a great player, I'll admit.

Too bad his greatness is overshadowed by his effing team.. Of all teams.. why the Cardinals? Why not someteam like TampaBay? >_<

What I like about him is his power is generated from a good swing. He doesnt have to over stride or take a big long swing(CPatt) I think alot of younger players were growing up hearing how good Griffey Jrs swing was. Which is complete bs. He overstrides and has a big long swing. He was able to compensate that when he was younger by being a super gifted athlete. Now that he is older even when he is healthy he isnt a great hitter anymore and will probably be done in a couple of years. Pujols on the other hand will always be at least a good hitter. As he gets older he might not have as much power but will still be a 300 hitter.

I live in central Illinois and am around alot of Cardinal fans and Cardinal news and what I really like about Pujols even more than his hitting is his attitude. Team 1st, Wants to improve and seems like a legitimate nice guy. You guys are right to bad he is on the Cards.

That was a nice swing by Pujols for the homerun. Stiff front leg...excellent hip torque...perfect balance. Man, I hope kids are watching him.

Im sure they caught 1 of the 20 replays of the home run.

Unfortunately, kids often emulate hitters with unique hitting styles. When I was younger, some of the guys I saw imitated the most were Eric Davis and Julio Franco (usually with diasterous results).

Persoanlly, I tried to emulate Mark Grace's hitting style.

But you are right, Pujols looks excellent at the plate the vast majority of the time.

Eh I don't think they'd have kept him

Interesting thought, actually, if the rays had an absolute stud like pujols, what would happen?

We may find out soon with Delmon.

Speaking as someone who knows very little about the minor leagues (and essentially nothing about minor leaguers in the cubs system you guys don't talk about), you think there's a chance this guy could be a perennial top 3 hitter/top 10 hitter if he's at a premium defensive position? I mean, statistically you can't have people like that more than a couple of times a decade

I certainly recognize the Cardinal organization's ability to recognize and develop talent, but Pujols is off the charts, and has been since the first day he stepped in from AA-ball for Bobby Bonilla.

The Cardinals got real lucky with this bloke, that's for sure.

You guys ask, 'why the Cardinals?' - luck, and that's it.

No scout could ever predict the kind of success this guy has had since day-one.

I am sooooo envious of the Cardinal fans because of Pujols...

Oh, how my hatred for the Cardinals runs deep!

Well obviously, if they'd known what pujols would be, or even suspected, he wouldn't have been 12th round.

But at some point (period of time), you have to attribute the general success of a farm system to skill rather than luck

Delmon will play RF, so not a premium defensive position. Pujols is almost a certain hall of fame player if he stays healthy, so I'm not going to predict that kind of success for Delmon. But he's the best hitting prospect in the minors, so it wouldn't suprise me to see him eventually develop into a top 10 offensive force. Right now he doesn't have that kind of plate discipline, though.

Oh, I agree with that (general success), but Pujols is anything but general.

Griffey's line this year:

491 AB: .301/32/92 .369/.576/.946

He was 10th among all outfielders in OPS. I wouldn't arrange the retirement party just yet.

Why was Pujols so low in the draft? I understand how someone like this can just be missed by so many.

kids should put all their weight on their back foot, keep their back elbow up, and take a darryl strawberry-like stride ;)

The batter I used as an "example" to my little leaguers was paul molitor --- all movements he made in the batter's box were solely to make him a better hitter. I haven't seen anyone more efficient in the box.

Time to add him to the list then. Is he expected to make the team next year?

Depends on if the ownership/front office want to start his clock towards free agency.

Yeah, TB finally leads the way in something in MLB

Tampa has been talking about holding both Delmon Young and BJ Upton back in AAA again next year, which would be stunning.

The same way guys like Piazza and Grace went really low. Scouting is an inexact science.

Some would say it is not a science at all but an art. There was a good article about Pujols in last week's ESPN the magizine. He was a little pudgy comming out of junior college and I think he had a bad senior year. The article made it seem like he is an even better person than a ball player. It is hard not to like the guy.

In all of sports the worst I've ever seen is Dan Marino going in the fifth or six round.

Marino went in the first round. It was just late in the first round.

My memory was pretty bad there. I think he was like the fourth or fifth quarterback choosen that year. But there were a lot of good QBs in the draft, if my memory is still not bad
