I dont want to wade through the pages, but some one tell me what the yanks are going to do at third?

If you're talking about a Cub/Yank deal either get Ramirez or sign Nomar.

Working with a couple assumptions:

1) Yankees will demand big names for Arod

2) Yankees are not interested in getting younger so much as they are getting back to the WS.

Yankees get:

Prior

Ramirez

Walker

Patterson

Wellemeyer

Cubs get:

Arod

Cano

Cubs then re sign Nomar to play 3rd and move Arod to SS. They also sign Burnett. Of course they'll need a LH hitting RF but that's already the case.

Fire away

We're giving up WAY too much there. No way do we trade Prior AND ARam for A-Rod. I don't think a single player in baseball is worth both Prior AND ARam.

There are hardly any TWO players I would trade Prior and Ramirez for. Both young top notch talents yet to enter their prime. In virtually any acceptable scenario, we would be adding payroll AND getting older.

The best I can come up with is Cabrera and Beckett/Dontrelle. Maybe.

People are vastly underestimating Mark Prior. This is a guy who, after a disappointing season, has a career 3.24 ERA (better than Johan Santana, Carlos Zambrano or Curt Schilling) and 1.19 WHIP who will be 25 for most of next season. Have we forgotten how rare this is? His career numbers across the board mirror those of Roger Clemens. His baseball intelligence is through the roof and he is highly disciplined.

It would be hard to trade this guy straight up for ANYONE, and pretend that it gives our team a better chance to win the world series in the next five years.

You advocate not only trading this man away, but tossing in the heart of our lineup, a .300 hitter, our enigmatic center fielder and a live bullpen arm.................................................................................for one man?

No thank you.

First of all, no one is underestimating Prior- or at least I'm not. Fact of the matter is that the Yankees aren't going to just give up Arod. They're going to demand big time talent back so any deal for Arod is going to be very expensive.

Second, not one man but two. Maybe Cano is a flash in the pan. From what I've seen he looks like a pretty good hitter and will only get better. I would be concerned about his OBP. Though he only walked 16 times in 500+ ABs he only K'd 68 times which suggests that he could hit for more than his .297 average this season. He has enough speed to bat 2nd and a .350 OBP isn't too much of a stretch.

Finally, Patterson and Wellemeyer have had many chances to show what they can do. I still believe that Patterson could turn it around but I also believe he'd have a better chance somewhere in the AL where he could be left at the bottom of the order to figure things out. Wellemeyer has to learn to throw his fastball for strikes.

No way do I trade Prior, not for anyone in baseball, It'd have to be a package of high caliber players to entice him out from me. The only stud on the team I'm open to trading is Wood, and there'd have to be a stud coming back.

The reason I think we could get the Yanks to bite on Wood is that I don't see anyone else in his league being offered on the market right now. If we offer Z or Prior, we'd be bidding against ourselves, no one is putting better pitching than Wood on the market.

If the Yankees are serious about getting younger and lowering payroll, some have asked who replaces A-Rod if they dealt him for 3B? The Yankees top prospect is 3B Eric Duncan, and he's ready. He's better than Robinson Cano, and the Yanks had no qualms about plugging him into the 2B slot this year.

So you trade them Felix Pie to replace Bernie Williams long-term, Rich Hill to replace Kevin Brown, and give them the free option on Corey Patterson: that's a big infusion of youth, and an enormous reduction in team payroll. Big Stein will never stand for any of this of course, but the logic works out good. If this were any team other than the Yankees we're talking about, I actually think it could happen. Alas...

Trade Patterson and Walker to Minnesota for Tori Hunter, in whom the Yanks are supposedly interested, then trade Hunter, ___________, and __________ for Arod.

I'll let you guys figure out the details. :P

Hah, how can Pie, Hill and Patterson for Arod have any logic to it?

When its all said and done ARod will probably be one of the top 5 players in our lifetime.

Not that this guy knows what he's talking about, but it is interesting to see someone else thinking what we're thinking:

Why not see if they can get something back from the National League in return? How about a young pitcher? Would the Padres do A-Rod for Jake Peavy? Could we swap Rodriguez for Kerry Wood and Jerome Williams?

If the Yankees offered ARod for Wood and Williams I think Hendry would have that deal done in a second. (I know, I know, assuming Wood waives the no trade clause)

Seriously. Just imagine the lineup possibilites.

Even though it just opens the door to more fairly baseless assumptions: would Kerry waive his clause to go to the Yanks?

I think that's the key question in this scenario. I think Hendry is most likely to let him go than Prior, Z, or Aram.

We'd be robbing the Yankees blind if they agreed to Wood and Williams straight-up. Unless we took on the entire contract.

Even if we take on the whole contract, it is still only part of the original 25 mil contract, because the Rangers still pay part of that. We'd only be paying about 5-6 mil next year, since Wood is making 10+.

Adding A-Rod in the Wood + Williams scenario necessitates signing Millwood too, because we'd need a starter. I advocate signing Millwood regardless of other moves the Cubs make--shoot, we have over $40MM in new money to spend, we can afford it. But moving Wood and Williams would require it. I'm not comfortable giving a rotation spot to Rich Hill, I think he's a flash in the pan with that gimmick curve ball.

Not only would I trade Wood and Williams for Arod, I'd even throw in Patterson and give a reliever like Leicester and Wellemeyer too.

I'd be leery of being able to sign Millwood in leiu of Hendry bringing in a guy like Kirk Rueter to be that 5th starter. I don't trust Rich Hill, and Pinto and Guzman are probably not ready. Likewise, I no longer have blind faith in Hendry to not sign washed up scrubs or bad players solely because they are veterans.

Not to say I wouldn't pull the trigger on that deal, or even throw in extra players to get it done, but I'd be concerned that we're dealing 40% of our expected 2006 rotation.

Hendry has already said that he's looking for a starting pitcher so it would only be 20% of the starting rotation that gets traded in that deal.

What will be interesting to see is if Rusch exercises his option or leaves via FA. If Rusch stays that provides a little more depth to fill in the rotation and makes Williams more expendable.
