Among those who have encouraged A.J. Burnett to sign with their team this winter: St. Louis' Albert Pujols, the Cubs' Michael Barrett and the Dodgers' Brad Penny. ' Paul Lo Duca says to me, `You're not going to leave me, are you?' '' Burnett said.

Burnett would be a good fit with Prior, Z, Wood, and Maddux.

Edited to fix the link.

Of course he would, but will the Cubs pony up the 10 mill + it will take to get him???? Needless to say this should be an interesting offseason........

well hes on pace to get near to 200 innings, so he might be less of an injury risk.

The game before the Sandberg number retiring, AJ was playing with the fans in the bleachers, kinda being a jerk, faking that he would throw balls into the stands and walking away, but then he came back out and threw about 20 balls into the stands and went inside, ten minutes later he comes into the bleachers, up through the entrance, and signed a bunch of balls and other stuff and took pictures with people in the stands for about 10 minutes.

I've said it before, I'll say it again:

Burnett (2005) = Pavano (2004)

that is all

No way. Burnett is legit. Pavano and Wright were one-hit wonders but Burnett is a legit pitcher.

How do you figure?

Pavano came out of nowhere to have his good year. All of his career he's been said to have so much potential and so much raw ability. This is is the validation and fruition of his hype; it's not creating it. Sure he could end up being a bust, but I see no reason to predict it.

not even close.

pavano is a below average pitcher who had a good year and was rewarded handsomely for it.

burnett has more talent in his left foot than pavano has in his whole body.

who is better is moot Burnett is going to make way more than he is worth

I agree. However, in this market and with the state of our farm system (studs 1+ years away from being solid contributors on a $100M ballclub) we're probably going to have to overspend. The FA market is going to be brutal.

I was sitting in the bleachers with Serena & BK the next day and AJB was back out near the outfield wall during BP. So I shouted out, "AJ, sign with the Cubs this offseason!"

He shouted back, "No way! I'm signing with the Cards!"

At which point he was roundly booed and harrassed by the whole section of the bleachers.

Come on...who doesn't want the pitcher who has the distint honor of having the UGLIEST NO-HITTER in baseball history?

I wouldn't mind Burnett, but I seriously doubt AJ comes here, unless he starts the conversation with Hendry and it starts with a discount "contract", which everybody knows WON'T happen. Hendry have bigger fish to fry (non pun intended) then acquiring Burnett.

FWIW, Levine mentioned on SportsNight (CSN) that the Cubs would be going hard after Burnett and quite possibly Furcal too. It was within the context that the Cubs and White Sox would be competing for some of the same free agents this offseason.

I wouldn't mind the move at all. Our SP could become a murderers row again with Z, Prior, Wood, Burnett, and Maddux. (Maddux WOULD be way overpaid, but for a 5th he's not that bad...)

Plus, I suppose we could then use Jerome and a few other guys as trade bait to fill the OF needs.

I know it has become cliche to say the Yankees will get players, but after this season's rotation debacle in the Bronx, I can't envision any scenario in which the top 2 or 3 starters on the market aren't in pinstripes next season, including Burnett.

It depends what Burnett wants to do if he's just after the money(like most of them) then sure he'll be a Yankee. I'd rather see him sign with NY than sign with the Cards or Stros this offseason.

I would love to see Burnett here. The weakest spot in the rotation would be Maddux, and that would only be his final year. We could replace him with one of the studs in our farm system after that.

Meh on Furcal. Maybe Cedeno or Walker could lead off next year.

I'm just not sure Burnett isn't Wood part two. Sure he's going to pitch 200 innings this year, but Kerry did the same in 2002 and 2003. I don't think it's wise to have to high salary, high injury risk pitchers in the rotation, but that's just me.

High talent is how I think of it. The Cubs could cut ties with Wood after 06 too. And Burnett would give the Cubs the flexibility to put Wood in the bullpen if he can't handle the starter's load.
