Why is Steve Phillips an announcer again?

You know this answer. Quite possibly one of the worst GM's of all time.

Because he got fired from a baseball job, that automatically makes him better than anyone with any acutal training or talent. Come on, you don't think John Kruk, Dibble or half of the other clowns who've gone from the game to the booth got the job on merit do you? They are recognizable and, usually colorful. They are told to be animated on the set, have an opinion and assert it forcefully. Whether they are right or not is immaterial. They also have an instant amount of recognition. In Phillips case, his former job gives him instant credibility, even if he did suck at it.

Howard Cosell termed it the Jockocracy way back in the '70s and it hasn't changed.

3-0 to Lee and he's swinging. I understand he's your best hitter, and the AB ended in a walk anyway, but there's no way he should have been swinging in my book.
Yes he should have been. That's a no-brainer.

Agreed. When you have your best hitter up there with no protection and about to get a fat pitch, swing away. Better to be 4-3 with 1 out bases empty then 4-0 bases loaded.

If the pitcher is guaranteed to throw a fat pitch, I agree. The fact is, Vargas was wild and there is no guarantee. If you take 3-0, you're guaranteed to get another swing if you so choose. If you swing 3-0, you don't have that luxury and you lessen the pressure on the pitcher.

Lee should have taken 3-0 and forced the pitcher to make a pitch. If he throws a strike, you get another swing. Why was Neifi swinging 3-0 after Burnitz walked? Why did Cedeno swing on the first pitch after that? It's poor organizational plate discipline.

See, the ESPN guys were right. Sign Neifi to a 7-year, $100 million deal to keep him away from the contenders!

if he would have stretched that into a triple (which he should have ) I would agree but because it was a dbl. sign him for only 94 mil

Wow, Barrett is less than stellar this season...what did PECOTA predict for him?

What are you talking about. He is the 2nd best offensive catcher in the majors

and quite possibly the 2nd worst defensive catcher

mhuber-

for a catcher, his numbers are good, but they are down from last season, and I'm pretty sure PECOTA predicted a decline. I'm just curious as to how big of a decline.

Errr...

Not sure if I see a decline there.

Can we please have the real Nomar Garciaparra back?

Of course,

All he has to do is sign with the Cards and he'll win the MVP next year.

Oh don't worry, we'll still get to see it. 17 times at least.

So you are assuming here that Lee would have swung at anything. He swung at a change down the middle and was early. Lee should have swung at the ball without any doubt and any baseball player would tell you the same thing. It is actually SMART baseball

If the Marlins score here, I'm off to read a book or watch a movie.
