That run scored I mentioned by the Marlins isn't far away... so what should I do with my free time coming up............ hmmm.

No sense wasting the precious time left of my vacation on these losers.

3-0 to Lee and he's swinging. I understand he's your best hitter, and the AB ended in a walk anyway, but there's no way he should have been swinging in my book.
Yes he should have been. That's a no-brainer.

Agreed. When you have your best hitter up there with no protection and about to get a fat pitch, swing away. Better to be 4-3 with 1 out bases empty then 4-0 bases loaded.

If the pitcher is guaranteed to throw a fat pitch, I agree. The fact is, Vargas was wild and there is no guarantee. If you take 3-0, you're guaranteed to get another swing if you so choose. If you swing 3-0, you don't have that luxury and you lessen the pressure on the pitcher.

Lee should have taken 3-0 and forced the pitcher to make a pitch. If he throws a strike, you get another swing. Why was Neifi swinging 3-0 after Burnitz walked? Why did Cedeno swing on the first pitch after that? It's poor organizational plate discipline.

So you are assuming here that Lee would have swung at anything. He swung at a change down the middle and was early. Lee should have swung at the ball without any doubt and any baseball player would tell you the same thing. It is actually SMART baseball

I completely disagree and you're using just the Lee at bat to prove your point. My point is that the entire team has a poor approach at the plate. I completely agree that Lee is the best hitter on the team. I question his approach in that situation. Base runners and on base percentage win ballgames. Making a struggling starter throw more pitches to get to the bullpen, wins ballgames. If Lee takes there, he's guaranteed to see another pitch in a hitters count.

Wow, Barrett is less than stellar this season...what did PECOTA predict for him?

What are you talking about. He is the 2nd best offensive catcher in the majors

and quite possibly the 2nd worst defensive catcher

mhuber-

for a catcher, his numbers are good, but they are down from last season, and I'm pretty sure PECOTA predicted a decline. I'm just curious as to how big of a decline.

Errr...

2004: 287/337/489 16HR 65RBI 33BB/64K

2005: 290/356/501 13HR 53RBI 33BB/48K

Not sure if I see a decline there.

Weird...I thought he was hitting .279...weird...my bad.

Barrett is currently hitting .289.

Jeff Conine turns into Ted Williams.

Only against the Cubs.

What about that Giants scrub some years back that set the record for most hits in a 3 or 4 game series with like 14 or something? Anyone else remember that?

Only against the Cubs. You're right.

When Nomar starts to play well, let me know, OK?

Just because he isn't doing well right now does not mean he's an "utterly awful baseball player."

Exactly. I asked if we could have the real Nomar Garciaparra back. You know the real Nomar is not an "utterly awful baseball player."

BTW for those who think that Barrett is the "2nd worst defensive catcher" in the league, I would disagree with that as well.

His .992 fielding percentage ranks above league average (and the same as Varitek, the #1 offensive catcher)

He has the highest range factor among regular catchers.

he has thrown out 19 of 55 runners which isn't bad (especially considering the staff and their lack of holding runners)

I think that Barrett is BY FAR the least of our concerns.

Q: What highlights do you remember the most about your playing career?

A: I ended up with the record for most hits in three consecutive games (14 with San Francisco in 1995) and tied the record for four (15). Also, going to the playoffs with Boston in 1998 was pretty cool.

Is this with Today's performance, because I pulled the numbers from Cubs.com
