Well, its worked twice with me starting the game thread this early. Let's try for the hat-trick.

Cards are in a slump of two.

Cubs are in a streak of two.

Cards' starter is 16-4 on the season thus far.

Cubs' starter is 3-5 on the season thus far.

Go Cubs!

NB - Living in the UK, my MLB.tv coverage of this game is not blacked out.

Go CUBS !!!

Living in Kansas, I better get this game.

Of course, there was 2003 where FOX and FX were supposed to be playing Red Sox/Yankees and Cubs/Marlins on opposite stations, yet somehow I ended up with Sox/Yanks on both. Stupid cable.

The Cubs are gonna win, again. I mean it.

Yes they will, but the question is how many games it will take them to.

Damn dude, you're good, i was just coming here to do that...

Today, we should focus on not letting the other team score as much as we do.

Here's an interesting study in contrast from our 8 game losing streak to the wins recorded in the last 2 games.....

Pretty intuitive so far. You hit well, you pitch well, you win. Here's some more interesting stuff....

          P/PA W/AB AB/HR R/G
8 losses 3.63 .049 66.25 2.75
2 wins 3.39 .097 24.00 7.50
season 3.62 .076 28.26 4.47

Look at those pitches per AB. The CUBS season total of 3.62 ranks 15th in the National League. League wide, the teams range from a high of 3.84 to a low of 3.53 with a median of 3.74. CUBS opponents see 3.82 P/PA.

Discussions about patience at the plate are not new to this board, but it's curious to me how our P/PA drops by 6.5% while the walk rate almost doubles (.049 to .097). Is this some of that elusive "agressiveness in the zone" we keep hearing about ? Or is this an example of running into a couple wild pitchers that are throwing more than their share of meat balls ? Or is this just the common type of anomoly that results from an inadequate sample size ?

In any case, we're going to face Chris Carpenter today. If we go up there in total free swinging mode.... I'm not real conviced of a positive outcome.

Love to hear your thoughts.

I'd probably call it an anomaly because of sample size, like you say.

I'm pretty sure this is what I heard on the Score:

Lawton

Walker

Lee

Ramirez

Burnitz

Garciaparra

Barrett

Patterson

Williams

That just might be the best lineup we've put out this year.

That's because dusty's been resting the good players all year. Now that the games are important, he puts out the best lineup.
