Ok, hypothetical question. Lets just say that today Jim Hendry decides that the fact the Cubs don't know little league level fundementals is Dusty Bakers fault. So he fires him. Later on, he asks YOU who he should name Interim Manager. Who do you pick?

This may not be a popular choice, but with only 50 some games left and the likelyhood of a postseason birth becoming more unlikely everyday, I might give Brenly a chance. Nice guy with past success, you could do worse for 50 games. Then again, maybe give Grady Little a chance to redeem himself.

Brenly, he knew form day 1 that a 1-2 of Patterson-Perez was the worst possible 1-2 the Cubs could put out there. Of course, that's not saying much, my 3 year old son knew it wasn't a good idea as well.

I'm guessing Brenly wouldn't be an "interim" being that he's a broadcaster and the Cubs would have to find another color man to finish out the season. I'm convinced Chris Speier would not be a good manager.

I'd probably go with Gary Matthews or Dick Pole as a lame duck manager.

What convinces you that Speier wouldn't be any good? I haven't heard anything about him, good or bad.

I don't think he's the brightest of men. I've heard him talk, and there's something I just don't trust about the guy.

I'd fire Dusty and Gary Matthews, Jr....

and call up Dickerson and Von Joshua to take their place.

Perfect for next year's team that has on it: Hill, Pie, Murton, Cedeno, Fontenot, etc...

This is a very tough question for me. The reason it is so tough is that I am thinking interim means until the end of the season and not next year. However, interim could turn into next year, so here goes nothing.

For the rest of the year:

Rothschild/Pole

I wouldn't mind seeing Little but I think he would be a candidate for a long term spot.

Who I would not like to see for the rest of the year:

Dickerson-too good to lose for only 50 games (unless he goes back to AA after the season)

Quade- Again, I like him down here in Des Moines-wouldn't like to see him take the job and not come back - See Bruce Kimm

Again, the key is if you are looking to fill the spot for only 50 games, or if you are looking to fill the spot for next season as well.

As far a Spier...I can't remember who said it (I think it may have been Brenly , but I am not sure) but someone said he may be the best 3rd base coach in the game. Can anyone back me up here, or did I just dream this up?

I don't want to see Brenley or Little anywhere near the dugout for this season or any other.

As for an interim manager, I would just go the old bench coach route and leave it at that, then I would try and go for someone I really wanted long term in the offseason. Before Oakland went on their tear, I really thought Ken Macha might become available, but that seems highly unlikely now.

I would say Grady Little. He's already on the Cubs' payroll (which would soften the impact of still having to pay Baker big bucks), and he has management experience.

Interim managers are dangerous because you run the risk of being trapped with them for the following season. Unless you know of a candidate that will provide a strong run to the post season NOW, I don't know that there is a lot to gain with the move.

However, under the circumstances, I wouldn't let that concern stop me from getting rid of Dusty immediately. But, I wouldn't place a serious candidate in the job now.

Perhaps you ride the wave and bring in Sandberg in the hopes of bringing a more professional attitude to the team. I admit, I wouldn't want Ryno as a long term solution, but an interim job might be perfect--it allows him to get his feet wet while capitalizing on his HOF run. However, any such move would have to lead with Ryno stating in his press conference that this is only temporary and doesn't intend on staying around (for now).

But, it was hard to sit through a half season of Bruce Kimm. The Cubs aren't the 2004 Astros or the 2003 Marlins. We know what this team has. As much as it pains me to say, there is no evidence that this club will make the playoffs this year. If there is no legit shot at the brass ring, hold on to Dusty and make an informed, thought out decision in the offseason.

Dumb and Dumber....

Hmm, who exactly could you be talking about? (Educated guess based on The General pic in your avatar)

Anyway, you're exactly right, interim's are dangerous. It might be different if the Cubs truly view Little or Spier as a long-term solution --long-term being something like three or four years, because that's how it goes anymore. Otherwise, a situation like you mentioned with Sandberg would be very appealing.

I don't like the peripherals that go with having an interim manager, but that's not to say I don't hope to see one at Wrigley managing the Cubs this season.

Davey Johnson or Larry Dierker. Both are unemployed and both would give the Cubs a great head start going into the new season. Who knows perhaps Davey gets them into the playoffs this year.
