Alfonso Soriano - Second Baseman

The New York Daily News believes the Twins are close to acquiring Alfonso Soriano for a package that would include Kyle Lohse.

J.C. Romero and Bret Boone have also been linked to the discussions, although the Dail News doesn't mention either. It's believed that the Mets are pretty much out of the hunt for Soriano, although the Cubs might not be. Jul. 31 - 4:15 am et

That's a bit interesting...

The fact that none of the major outlets are reporting that the Cubs are heavily involved in any trade talks is a good sign (for those amongst us who want a trade to be made).

Its also evidence, IMO, that Hendry handles the things the right way.

No thanks on Soriano.

I still think that any trade by the Cubs involving Soriano is part of a 3-way deal (to the Mets for Floyd or Cameron?). I don't think Hendry would mess with 2B (getting rid of Walker for Soriano), plus Soriano does not want to play LF and come to the NL. While Soriano is a good young power hitter, a moody, expensive Soriano might be more trouble than he is worth.

I'd still like to hear something :)

BTW, can anyone tell me if the BBTN at 12:30 ET is a repeat? Or is it an abbreviated trade deadline special? I know the big show they do is on later, but I work this afternoon . . .

The DirecTV info doesn't say repeat, and it says live, but I can't tell you for sure.

The Twins are scouting the Giants - presumably for Edgardo Alfonzo or Ray Durham. This could be their backup plan for Soriano.

From Rotoworld:

Edgardo Alfonzo - 3B - Giants

The Twins had a scout watching the Giants and Brewers over the weekend, indicating that Minnesota may have some interest in Edgardo Alfonzo or Ray Durham.

Although the Giants are adding rather than subtracting, both infielders still could be available. Pedro Feliz would play third base if Alfonzo goes. Jul. 31 - 11:41 am et

Or they could just call up my cousin who is playing 2nd on their High A team right now :-) :-) :-)

Supposedly the package set up for Soriano is Walker + Pinto + Mitre + Wellemeyer.

Yuck?

EDIT: From Bruce Levine on ESPN 1000.

I wouldn't mind it seeing as Mitre and Wellemeyer don't really fit into our plans and much as i like Pinto - it means we keep Hill. That deal probably would include others from the Rangers side - Delucci or Mench would be nice - but one of their pen arms would be good too. I would expect that they'd definitely include prospects though.

Where did you hear this?

Was this on the radio or something?...

I wouldn't mind so much if others were involved but I really wouldn't like to get rid of Pinto.

I say do it if that's what Texas wants.

Mitre is not a reliever at all and is an AAAA player, Pinto has had some troubles in Triple A and is pitching pretty decent in double a, welly has some control problems when he was up for us and Walker, sometimes it seems, just doesn't want to be here with Dusty here.

I just feel that we are valuing our prospects way too much.

Just remember, the future can't help us win now.

I wouldnt trade Walker for Soriano straight up.

I would. Walker's been one of my favorite players the past few years but I'll take the guy who can go 40/100 while scoring 120 runs in a heartbeat.

What's the point of giving up three serviceable arms when Walker provides essentially the same production as Soriano? (At 1/3rd the cost, no less?) Needless to say I think this would be an insanely stupid trade on the part of the Cubs. (And my opinion of Hendry would fall to Baker-esque levels if it went down.)

No improvement to the team at the cost of depleting our most tradeable commodities and a severe hit in the budget? No way. I'll say it again; I'm only remotely interested in Soriano if he ends up in Left and Walker stays at second. Otherwise, Texas is more than free to keep him.
